Mr. Wilkie Lee Brooks Sr.

BROOKS, Mr. Wilkie Lee, Sr. - Age 73, passed away Wednesday February 12, 2014 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 11 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 at Rising Star Baptist Church, 502 W. Flint Park Blvd. with funeral service commencing at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Gary B. Woods, Sr. officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Association, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 11 a.m. Friday. Mr. Brooks will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday. Wilkie Lee Brooks, Sr., affectionately known as “Wilk” and “Brooks”, was born on September 2, 1940 in Gethsemane, Arkansas the son of the late Bennie & Nancy (McWillis) Brooks. Wilkie accepted Christ at an early age at Central Baptist Church in Gesthemane, AR. He later joined St. Mark Baptist Church in Sherrill, AR under the leadership of the late Pastor Roosevelt Kendle. In 1959, Wilk met the love of his life Bernice Collins. They later married in 1966 in Little Rock, AR, to this union came five children. He also had one daughter from a previous marriage. Brooks was a hard worker and after working for the Railroads in Arkansas he later relocated to Flint, MI in 1973 and worked for General Motors – Fisher Body 1 (Local 581). He retired after 15 years of service due to medical issues. Wilkie was also a faithful member of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Chester Payton where he was a deacon, he drove the church van for many years, and he started the Rising Star Male Chorus and participated in the Male Chorus until he was not able to do so anymore. Brooks loved to pray. He would pray out loud throughout the house and his family was accustomed to hearing him. He also loved to fish, entertain whoever was in his company, and spend time with his family. Mr. Brooks leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Bernice; 4 daughters, Debra (John) Love of Flint, MI; Sandra K. Brooks of Racine, WI; Shawna Brooks-Wade of Arlington, TX, & LaKeitha (Cedric) Givens of Grand Blanc, MI; 2 sons, Wilkie Brooks Jr. of Flint, MI and Kevin (Aida) Brooks of Grand Blanc, MI; 20 grand-children; Juan (DeAndrea), Jessica, John Jr. (Christine), Albert, Derrick, Jarvis, Demarcus, DeQuan, DeShawn, Jada, ShaKira, Shantae, Spirit, Alexa, Shakyra, Cedric Jr., Andre, Seth, Chamaad, & Shamiya; 8 great-grandchildren, Devin, Jordan, Purpose, Peyton, Cameron, Derriona, Kenton, & Danye; 3 sisters-in-law, Alberta Brooks of Little Rock, AR. Bobbie Collins of Flint, MI & Ethel Mae Thomas of Pine Bluff, AR; 2 brothers-in-law, Walter Collins of Flint, MI & Sam Hunter of Little Rock, AR; A host of other relatives and friends including special son, Colandros Robinson; special nieces and nephews Wilkie help to rear, Arlene Collins, Donnell Thomas, Kenneth Collins, Lisa Collins, Tyrus Gaines and Leo Brooks; special friend/sister, Tommizene Robinson. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by: his parents, Bennie & Nancy Brooks; 3 sisters, Buelah (Odell) Woods, Geneva (George) Morrison, & Catheine Collins-Blacknall; 4 brothers, Future Brooks, Ivory Brooks, Colister Brooks, Cornell (Freddie Mae) Brooks; mother-in-law, Edna Collins; sisters-in-law, Lebirtha Reynolds, Elizabeth Watts, Edna-Mae Hunter, Erma Lee Sanders, Queen-Ester Walker; brothers-in-law, Luther Shavers, Earnest Moore, Moses Collins, Willie Odell Collins, Raymond T. Collins, and Hillrie-Lee Moore.
