JOHNSTONE, Mrs. Shirley - age 78 passed away, September 4, 2011 at Genesys Hospice in Goodrich, MI. Family hour 12Noon Monday, September 12, 2011 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 502 Leith St., with funeral service commencing at 1 p.m. Pastor Daniel Moore officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12Noon. Mrs. Johnstone will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Mrs. Shirley Joanne Johnstone affectionately called “Jobaby” by her family and friends was born September 18, 1932 in Flint, Michigan the only child of Mamie Frazier and Aldrich Battle. Shirley was a resident of Beecher and a lifelong resident of Flint, Michigan. She attended Shiloh Baptist Church until her health failed. Shirley was employed at McLaren Regional Medical Center and retired from AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors after many years of service. She volunteered for the Flint Police Mini Stations, the Cub Scouts of America and did a lot of volunteer work in her neighborhood. Shirley enjoyed traveling, watching movies, playing Pokeno and loved going to the casinos. She also loved spending a great deal of time with her family and friends. Shirley was truly kind hearted, a very strong and a giving person not only to her family but others as well. Mrs. Shirley Joanne Johnstone leaves to cherish her memory: three children, Clarence, Jr. “Beaver” (Angela) Johnstone of California, Dr. Keith (Christina) Johnstone of Bloomfield Hills, MI and Cindy Johnstone of Lansing, MI whom was always by her side throughout her illness; 5 grandchildren, Blake Johnstone, Lashawnda Paylor, Kristen Johnstone, Kaitlin Johnstone, Keith Johnstone, Jr.; one great-grandson, Jaylen Fairley, whom she lovingly referred to as her “leg” because of his willingness to help “Jobaby” as her illness progressed; a host of other relatives and friends including, Betty Wallace who was like a sister to her, Catherine “Honey” Henley, John Caldwell and very special cousins and friends, Jackie Watkins and Annie Carmichael Reed. Mrs. Johnstone was preceded in death by husband, Clarence Johnstone, Sr.; mother, Mamie Frazier; father, Aldrich Battle; stepfather, Joseph Frazier and half brother, Archie Frazier. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Khalil Katato and the Genesys/Hurley Cancer Institute staff, The staffs of Hurley Medical Center, Heritage Manor, Genesys Hospice of Goodrich, MI, Midway Market and the Newell Street family. A very special thanks to her caregivers, Susette Wallace, Brianna Wallace, Lashawnda Paylor, Jaylen Fairley and everyone who was by her side during her illness.
