FINNEY, Mrs. Rosie Lee - Age 80, passed away Monday, January 1, 2024, at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:00 AM Thursday, January 11, 2024, from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Mrs. Finney will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Wednesday. Mrs. Rosie Lee Finney was born October 29, 1943 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the daughter of Gertrude and Robert James Echols Jr. Rosie received her wings Monday, January 1, 2024 at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. She moved to Flint at the age of 11 and later graduated from old Flint Northern High School. Rosie met and married the love of her life, Vermont Finney Sr. in 1963 and from this union, 3 children were born. She was employed at Hurley Medical Center first as a Cook and later became a Supervisor in Nutritional Services for over 35 years. After retiring she volunteered at Hurley in the gift shop. Rosie was a member of Foss Avenue Baptist Church, Second Chance Church and Now Ministries where she served as an Usher and worked in the Food Pantry. Rosie loved shopping, she was known for being a well put together person and also loved Jazz music. Before her illness she was involved in a number of organizations including, the Genesee County and Michigan State Democratic Parties. Rosie also was active in the Progressive, Women’s and Black Caucuses. Rosie was the Matriarch of her family, fierce but affectionately known by all of her nieces and nephews as “Aunt Mommy”. Mrs. Rosie Lee Finney leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Elizabeth Finney of Flint; son, Vuai Finney of Clio, MI; 3 grandchildren, Quenton (Trina) Finney of Minneapolis, MN, Shatia Mister of Houston, TX and Bianca Mister of Flint; 6 great-grandchildren, Aniya Rhodes, Caleb Finney, Bre’onn Mister, Jade Anderson, Kaiden Mister-Anderson and Liyah Mister-Anderson; 2 sisters, Evelyn Echols and Renell Echols; brother, William A. Echols Sr., all of Flint; a host nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; 2 sisters-in-law, Verlon Buckwheat of Johnson City, TN and Vanessa Scruggs of Flint; brother-in-law, Fredrick McHaney of Otisville, MI; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Margaret Coney of Flint, Vaneva Ewell and Helen McGhee. Mrs. Finney was preceded in death by her husband, Vermont Finney Sr.; son, Vermont Finney Jr.; granddaughter, Marquita B. Finney; parents, Gertrude and Robert Echols Sr.; grandparents, Johnnie Perkins, Evelyn Echols and Robert Echols Sr.; aunt and uncle, Lovee and Richard Hampton; siblings, Willie James Echols, Isside Echols, Pastor Brenda Echols Smith and Pastor Janice McHaney; and nephew, Hubert Hudson. The family would like to express special thanks to the family and friends who texted, called, visited, prayed and sent well wishes. Thanks also to the Hurley Medical Center 4th Floor ICU staff.
