Rodney Akins

AKINS, Mr. Rodney C. - Age 51, departed this life, Satuday, June 25, 2011 at Cardinal Nursing Home in South Bend, Indiana. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Greater Holy Temple C.O.G.I.C., G-6702 N. Dort Hwy., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Bishop Roger L. Jones, Sr., officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Akins will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1-8 p.m. Friday. Mr. Rodney C. Akins was born February 8, 1960 the son of Shirley Akins and the late Joseph Akins in Elkhart, Indiana. Rodney attended school in the Beecher School District until moving to Elkhart, Indiana, where he later finished his schooling. He graduated from the U.S Marine Corps Recruit Training, San Diego, CA. While in San Diego, he participated in a vigorous and demanding training program which emphasized physical conditioning and basic leadership skills. While in the service Rodney continued his training in the Food Services Field. He also enjoyed fishing and painting. Mr. Rodney C. Akins leaves in God’s care: mother, Shirley Akins; daughter, Crashana Akins of Atlanta, GA.; two sons, Rodney C. Akins, Jr. of Misawa, Japan and Nicholas Akins of Flint, MI; sister, Teri Akins of Flint, MI; two brothers, Anthony Akins of Elkhart, IN and Darth (Virgina) Akins of Winterville, NC; grandson, Darron Gaddis of Flint, MI.; two aunts, Patricia (Perry) Kirkendoll of Elkhart, IN, and Barbara (Willie) Gary of Indianapolis, IN; two uncles, Robert Lewis of Indianapolis, IN, and Robert Akins of Winterhaven, FL.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including many devoted special friends, Ocie Lewis, Winfrey Lewis, Hank Robinson, Michael Hawthorne, Darlene Sleepers, Delfene Sleepers and Morris Sleepers. Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his father; grandparents; aunts including special aunt, Miss Leada Curry; and uncles. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Barbar and the staff at Cardinal Nursing Home, South Bend, IN.
