NELSON, Mr. Robert Elise - Age 84, passed away Monday, October 1, 2018 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 Am Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Second Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 6046 N. Clio Rd., Mt. Morris, MI with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM , Pastor Rodney Williams, officiating. Interment Gracelawn Community Cemetery, G-5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:30 AM Saturday. Mr. Nelson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 2:00 PM-8:00 PM Friday. Mr. Robert Elsie Nelson better known as “Big Man” age 84, was born September 27, 1934 in Starkville, Mississippi, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert and Susie Nelson. He made his transition to his home with Christ, Monday, October 1, 2018. Mr. Nelson accepted Christ at an early age where he attended church in Starkville. He later became a member of Second Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Flint, Michigan, where he served as a Security Guard and sang with the Male Chorus. Mr. Nelson attended school in Starkville, MS. He met and married Mrs. Leatha Nelson and to this union one child was born, Russell Nelson. After moving to Flint he began working for Buick Motor Company, a division of General Motors and was a member of UAW Local #599 retiring with 32 years of service. Mr. Nelson loved to sing songs with the Gospel Southernaires for many years. Two of his favorite songs were “Smoothing Out The Rough Road” and “Try On My Long White Robe.” Mr. Robert Elsie Nelson “Big Man” leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Annie L. Nelson of Flint; sons, Russell Nelson of Starkville, MS and Sam Nelson of Louisiana; daughter, Mary VanBuren; 2 step-sons, Eddie and Leon Horton; step-daughter, Renee Horton, all of Flint; 14 grandchildren; a host great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 6 sisters, Clarice Webber, Margaret (Murry J.) Mills, Emma J. (Robert) Nichols, Mary Mister, Dorothy (Charles) Gregg, all of Chicago, IL and Ollie Deloach; 3 brothers, Robert J. (Mattie) Nelson, all of Flint, John and Kermit Nelson, both of Starkville, MS; brother-in-law, Rev. Dr. Lewis Randolph of Davison, MI; a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special friends, Liz Osborn, Sam and Berthalee Walker, Ann Rankin, Joshua Hicks, Mr. Hobson of Huntsville, AL and Johnny Malone of Starkville, MS. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Nelson; parents, Robert and Susie Nelson; mother of his child, Leatha Nelson; sister, Jeanine Randolph; brothers-in-law, Earl Webber, Fred Mister and Rev. Roosevelt Deloach; and good friends, Henry Rankin and Smitty.
