Deacon Oscar Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE, Deacon Oscar - Age 86, made his transition Monday, May 1, 2017 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 12:00 PM Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Ebenezer Ministries, 2130 S. Center Rd., with funeral service commencing at 1:00 PM Bishop Urundi Knox, Senior Pastor, Min. Oscar L. Hawthorne officiating, Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12:00 PM Saturday. Deacon Hawthorne will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday. Oscar Hawthorne was born November 20, 1930, to the late J.B and Millie (Lovin) Hawthorne in Noxapater, Mississippi, Oscar was the eldest of nine children. He will be remembered as a compassionate man of God. From humble beginnings in the rural south, Oscar made his way to Flint, Michigan in 1955 and began a 32-year career at the General Motors V-8 Engine Plant. For the majority of his years at the plant, Oscar was a "relief man" working a number of different assembly line jobs. He was always grateful for the opportunity to work for General Motors and provide for his family. Oscar was a longstanding member of Ebenezer Ministries and a true servant of Christ. He was ordained a deacon in 1991 by Reverend Clarence Knox and served as a faithful Sunday school teacher for the Men's Class for many years. Oscar was also known for his pancakes and cookies which were always a hit at home and at church. He loved spiritual music, quartet singing, fishing and hunting. Oscar Hawthorne leaves to cherish his wife of 37years, Deloris. He was a loving father to Lila Petett of Dayton, Ohio, Oscar L. (Kimberly) Hawthorne of Schaumburg, IL, William E. (Sherda) Polk of Detroit Michigan who mourn his passing. He will forever be remembered and loved by his grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Brice, Ajah, Elyse, Alexia, and great grandchild Ashten. Oscar also enjoyed serving as the adoptive parent of Tracey Jackson and grandfather to Daniel Pruitt. He will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Oscar is survived by brothers, Johnny (Thelma) Hawthorne, Willie (Betty) Hawthorne, Abraham (Flora Jean) Hawthorne; and sisters, Emma Hawthorne and Pauline (Edward) Hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Melvin Hawthorne, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Rushia Hawthorne.
