HOUSTON, Mrs. Odessa - Age 97, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024 at Wellbridge of Fenton, Fenton, MI. Family hour 10:00 AM Thursday, December 19, 2024, from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Interment Flint Memorial Park, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy, Mt. Morris. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:00 AM Thursday. Mrs. Houston will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home. Public visitation will be during family hour only. Evangelist Odessa Houston was born May 24, 1927 in Gadsden, Alabama, the daughter of Joe and Rosetta Whiteside. Her former education was in Gadsden, AL. Evangelist Odessa Houston was a member of Pentecostal Temple Church Of God In Christ, under the leadership of the late Pastor James P. Sanders for many years. She was a faithful servant of the Lord during her ministry and continued until the end of her days. Evangelist Houston’s accomplishments included become a Certified Nurse Assistant 1 & 2, working for Woodside Church and becoming a School Aide for Cummings Elementary School. She was nominated and became the recipient of the Mother of the Year Award in the City of Flint, Michigan in 1989. Evangelist Houston was a woman of many gifts. She was an excellent cook, singer, seamstress and also a great woman of God. Her hobbies were sewing, Crossword Puzzles and knitting. Evangelist Houston was a woman who desired to help others whenever she could. Always giving her best to overcome adversity and standing strong in her belief and faith in Christ. Evangelist Houston gave of herself to others, which led to her becoming a Foster Parent for 4 children and eventually went on to adopt 2 of them. Evangelist Odessa Houston leaves to cherish her memory: 5 daughters and 5 sons, Joe (Anniken) Johnson of Norway, Maudell Houston of Flint, Linda Williams of Mt. Morris, MI, Jessie (Joe) Ryan of Novi, MI, Clifton Houston of Flint, Celia Williams of Flint Twp., MI, Levan (Joyce) Whiteside of Mt. Morris, MI, Roy Houston of Stone Mountain, GA, and Melvin (Miranda) Houston of Atlanta, GA; adopted children, Cameron Houston and Marie Houston; 3 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Evangelist Houston was preceded in death by her loving husband, Elder Clifford Houston; son, Donnie Houston; daughter, Rosa Patterson; a grandson and 3 sons-in-law; parents, Joe and Rosetta Whiteside; 6 sisters; 2 brothers. The family would like to express special thanks to Pastor Ronald Wilson, a long-time friend, Wellbridge of Fenton and staff, Notting Hill staff of W. Bloomfield, MI, McLaren Hospice of Michigan for her care and comfort.
