BROOM, Ms. Mary - Age 51, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing immediately at 11 a.m., Rev. Ted McGlothin officiating. Interment Gracelawn Community Cemetery, G-5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Ms. Broom will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 12Noon-8 p.m. Friday. Ms. Mary Francis “Mookie” Broom was born June 15, 1958 in Greenwood, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Richard and Mary Lena Broom, Sr. Mary accepted Christ at an early age at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. B.T. McSwine. She attended Threadgill Elementary and Greenwood High School. Mary moved to Flint, later in life. Ms. Mary Francis “Mookie” Broom leaves to cherish her memory: 3 daughters, Salina, Sabrina and Laswanda Liggins; grandchildren, Robert L., Tabreonna, Tyrone and Rachimeer Liggins, Seriyah Barrower and Jonathan Edmonds; mother, Mary Lena Broom; 3 sisters, Isabella (Claude) McGlothin, Katherine (Abe) McGlothin, all of Greenwood, MS and Gladys Broom (Robert) Wiggins of Chicago, IL; 6 brothers, Richard, Jr., Bennie, Melvin, Dwayne and Louise Broom including honorary brother, Maurice Brooks; 12 nieces; 19 nephews; aunt, Gladys Hudson of Greenwood, MS; 2 uncles, D.H. Hughes of Detroit, MI and Hurbert Hughes of St. Louis, MO; 100 cousins; 3 sisters-in-law, Yvette Broom of Norfolk, VA; Dorothy Anderson of Greenwood, MS and Virgin Broom of Detroit, MI; a host of other relatives and friends including Collen Liggins, Leslie Logan, Robert Lee Liggins, Benard Blackman, Frankie Ervin, Shirley Swim, B.P., Pauline Outland, Georgia Ann Overstreet, Bernie and Joe Thompson. Ms. Broom was preceded in death by her father, Richard Broom, Sr.; grandparents; and 2 brothers, Henry Lee and Emmit Broom. The family would like to express special thanks and gratitude for the many acts of kindness shown during their hour of bereavement.
