Mrs. Luevercy "Bae Mae" Pitts

PITTS, Mrs. Luevercy "Bae Mae" - Age 94, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at her residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2120 N. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Daniel Moore, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. Pitts will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday with family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends. Mrs. Luevercy Izola Pitts, affectionately known as, "Baby May,” and “Bae Mae,” was born on May 6, 1930, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to the union of William Clarence McMahan and Alice Wine. She was the youngest of four siblings. On January 28, 2025, a living library became legendary when Luevercy peacefully departed this life surrounded by the love of her family. Her words: “I went from the cotton field to the city.” In pursuit of a better life for their family, in 1953, Luevercy and Leslie Pitts, Sr, migrated north to Detroit, Michigan, before settling in Flint in 1954. They successfully raised a family teaching their children the value of hard work through their experience and example. Luevercy accepted Christ at an early age and her spiritual strength was undeniable. She shared her wisdom with everyone, positively touching and changing lives. She was a member of Joy Missionary Baptist Church. Not only was she dedicated to nurturing her own children, she also nurtured countless others throughout the neighborhood and the community. She fostered many children along the way. Everyone loved, “Ms. Bae Mae!” Even when she corrected you she did it with compassion and love. Luevercy’s home was filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals and her specialty, tea cakes. The family ate Sunday dinner together and our home was open to anyone to stop by unannounced. She was extremely passionate about fishing and would fish from sun-up to way past sundown. Luevercy had a great sense of humor and she loved to talk. She also loved playing games and the joy shared from her competitive spirit was contagious. Bid Whist and Scrabble were her go-to games, and there was no way she was going to go easy on you! Luevercy was the catalyst in starting the Flint Arkanetta Club, an early social club made up of people from Arkansas and other southern states. They met regularly and planned parties and other community activities. Luevercy was committed to education which led her to complete her GED while her youngest children were in high school, demonstrating that learning is a lifelong journey. An avid reader and talented poet, she regularly shared her gift of verse through her church's weekly bulletin. She kept her mind sharp by solving crossword puzzles, and through modern technology, she enjoyed playing word games on her iPhone and iPad.In the presence of family, friends, and neighbors, on July 30, 2023, she received one of her proudest honors when Flint Mayor Sheldon Neely proclaimed it "Mrs. Luevercy Pitts Day," and presented her with a key to the City, celebrating her lasting impact on the community. Mrs. Luevercy Izola Pitts leaves to cherish her memory her children: Johnny (Katy) Pitts, Richard (Janice) Pitts, Zenobia “Bonnie” Pease, Marilyn Pitts, Vanetta Pitts, JaNice Marshall, Reginia “Pinky” (Bill) Shelton, and Kermit (Andrea) Pitts; stepson, Lee (Jametta) Harper. Her legacy continues through 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Doris Brooks Holmes, Gertrude Smith, and RuThee Bey; along with a host of foster children, adopted children, neighborhood children, nieces, nephews, and friends who knew her loving embrace as "Mom." Luevercy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Leslie L. Pitts, Sr.; sons, Leslie L. Pitts, Jr. and Jamie Maurice Pitts; granddaughters, Mica Pitts and Kamilah Pitts; great-grandsons, Anthony White and Rudy Rison; her parents, William Clarence and Alice McMahan; sisters, Zenobia Jackson and Thelmary Vance; brother, Earthy “Bud” McMahan; mother-in-law, Emma Pickens; and father-in-law, Isaiah Pitts.
