Mrs. LaJoyce Reaves

REAVES, Mrs. LaJoyce M. - Age 84, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at her residence. Family hour 11:30 AM Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Blackwell AME Zion Church, 1901 Sonny Street, with funeral service commencing at 12:00 Noon Rev. Darrin Overton Host Pastor, Rev. Oneil Whiley officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11:30 AM Saturday. Mrs. Reaves will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday, with the family present from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM to receive friends. Mrs. LaJoyce Reaves was born August 2, 1932 in Columbus, Mississippi, the daughter of Theodore Sparks and Lemanda (Brooks) Sparks. LaJoyce was a resident of Flushing, MI. She was a lifelong member of Blackwell A.M.E. Zion Church in Flint, where she sang in the choir for many years. LaJoyce attended Detroit Public Schools, graduating from Miller High in 1949. LaJoyce retired from AC Spark Plug. Before her illness, she loved to travel, cook, bowl, play cards, go to casinos and spend time with her grandchildren. Mrs. LaJoyce Reaves leaves to cherish her memory: 3 children, Joya (Mary) Reaves-Embry of Flushing, MI, Blake (Leslie) Reaves of Durham, NC and Philip Reaves of Flushing, MI; 14 grandchildren, Makayla and Jovan Embry of Flushing, MI, Brittany (Marcus) Zollicoffer, Blake II and Niya Reaves of Durham, NC, Alexis Reaves of Atlanta, GA, Chani Reaves of Ypsilanti, MI, Shannon Reaves of Detroit, MI, Schnell, Monica and Erik Reaves of Flint, MI, Toyai (Shannon) Alexander of Jefferson Parrish, LA, Antonio Bryer of Detroit, MI, Ishmael Hamilton of Flint; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way; great-great-granddaughter; a host of nieces including Venetia Petteway, nephews, cousins, including Geraldine Bond of Detroit, MI; 2 sisters-in-law, Effie Reaves of Flint and Hermie Sparks of Mt. Morris, MI; daughters-in-law, Ruby Bryer of Detroit, MI and Toksun “Lisa” Reaves of Flint; special friends, William “Billy” (Sharon) Broadway, Willie and Angeline Spencer and Maxine Clemons. Mrs. Reaves was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Alfred Reaves; brothers, Theodore “Sonny” Sparks and Charles “Toots” Sparks; 3 sons, Scott Chaney, Chedrick “Ricky” Reaves and Kevin Reaves; 2 grandchildren, Andre Bryer and Philip Reaves, Jr.; 6 brothers-in-law, Charles, Leon, Calvin, Lendy and Harrell Reaves. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Kindred at Home and in particular: Penny, Shannon and Amber for the special care and attention that was given to our “Sugah” during this time.
