Mr. John Lewis Simpkins

SIMPKINS, Mr. John Lewis - Age 82, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2024 at McLaren-Port Huron. Family Hour 10:00 AM Friday, April 12, 2024 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 10:30 AM. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, Michigan. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the chapel 10:00 AM Friday. Mr. Simpkins will lie in state in the chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Thursday. John Lewis Simpkins was born 07/18/1941 in Postelle, Arkansas the son of Wesley and Louella Simpkins. He loved to keep busy with his hands, always working on some project and building or renovating something. He was an ardent reader who would listen for hours to speeches and documentaries of several great black heroes and civil rights leaders like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. He had recently become an avid You Tube watcher, enjoying documentaries on history, watching many gospel quartets and videos, especially Rance Allen and Shirley Ceasar. John was a very kind and generous person who loved his family and was always willing to help whenever he could without being asked. He was a very noble and private man but could also be quite a jokester getting one in on you just when you least expected it. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious and warm laugh. He will be deeply missed. John Lewis Simpkins leaves to cherish his memory: 2 daughters, Darneese and Daneen Simpkins of Flint, MI; 5 sons, Douglas Ivory, Memphis, TN; Danny Simpkins of Louisiana; Darryl Simpkins of Ohio; Tyric Thomas, Birch Run, MI; grandchildren, Roderick Thomas of Maumelle, AR, Douglas Ivory, Jr of Memphis, TN, D’yante & D’Nisha Simpkins, Kenneth “Hotfoot” Simpkins, Novi, MI; Tonajee Thomas and Tyrick Thomas all of Flint, MI, Latonya, Pamela and Shannon Ivory of Memphis, TN; LaTasha Simpkins, Lativa Simpkins, Sade Drumwright, all of Flint, MI; great-grandchildren, Yasmine Robinson, Isaiah Thomas, RaMello & RaMani Robinson, Lennox Fielder, Demonni and Tayvious Thomas, Jacari Smith, Remi Simpkins, Roderick Jr and Raylon Thomas, Liam and Emily Rose Ivory; sisters, Jerdine Snell and C.L. Booth all of Flint, MI, Gloria Hanson of Mt. Morris, MI; brother, Floyd Simpkins of Mt. Morris, MI; a host of aunts, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends survive to cherish his memory. John was preceded in death by his sons, Douglas Ivory and Willie Mathis; parents, Wesley and Louella Simpkins; grandparents, Doc and Lizzie Page; wives, Ethel Simpkins and Tempie Ann Simpkins; sisters, Clara Spiller, Emma Jean Simpkins, Veria Pitts, Loretta Young and Shirley Ann Carter; brothers, Calvin Simpkins, Charles Simpkins, his twin, James “Joe” Simpkins.
