NEWKIRK, Mrs. Ida B. - Age 78, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023, at McLaren-Flint. Family hour 1:30 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2023, from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, G-5175 E. Bristol Rd., Burton, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 1:30 PM Wednesday. Mrs. Newkirk will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Tuesday. Ida B. Newkirk was born Ida B. Thompson, July 25, 1944 in Denison, TX, the daughter of Mack and Cleotha (Goodlow) Thompson. Affectionately known as “B,” she spent a significant portion of her formative years in Newburgh, NY. She would later move to Flint, MI where she was a resident for more than 60 years. In January of 1963, Ida married Bobbie Newkirk, with whom she raised two children, Marilyn Thompson and Robert Newkirk. In later years, she was a loving bonus mom to LaQwanda and Kurtis Thompson. Ida was passionate about her love for God and her love for her family. She modelled faith and prayer as standards in every area of her life. She was a member of Agape Faith Fellowship Church. One who operated faithfully in the gift of service, Ida was a nurse’s aide for a number of years. This gift was also evident in her approach to customer service before she retired from her role as a greeter at Sam’s Club. Ida, lovingly called “Big Ma,” by her grands and great grands, enjoyed spending time with family, watching action films and westerns, gardening, reading the bible, watching TCT, and listening to meaningful sermons. She had a great sense of humor and a great sense of style, demonstrated by her appreciation for leopard print fabrics. Ida leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Marilyn Thompson; son, Robert Newkirk; great-niece, LaQwanda Thompson; great-nephew, Kurtis Thompson; 7 grandchildren, Teneka Thompson, Keniatta Thompson, Demetrius Thompson, Montez Newkirk, Cedric Murphy, Deloran Newkirk, and Devin Thompson; 18 cherished great-grandchildren; nieces, Yvonne Seales, Rosetta Thompson, Renea Smith, Penelope Dunbar, and Kimberly Phinney; great-niece, Shavonte Seales-Gray; nephews, Frederick Thompson, Michael Thompson, Terry Phinney, Franklin Smith, Steven Kochan, and Anthony Ramirez; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including former spouse, Bobbie Newkirk. Ida B. Thompson was preceded in death by her father, Mack Thompson; mother, Cleotha Thompson; sisters, Gloria Ramirez, Jewel Phinney, and Altha Thompson; nieces, Sandra and LaCindra.
