GILBERT, Mr. Elston Wayne - Age 58, passed away Monday, August 13, 2018 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Second Chance Church, 2070 W. Coldwater Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Derrick Aldridge officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Tuesday. Mr. Gilbert will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday. TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE: Ecclesiastes 3:1 Springtime thoughts of the old giving away to the new. Today we gather to celebrate a new life into which Mr. Elston Wayne Gilbert has entered into life in the presence of his God and Lord; Creator and Savior. A TIME TO BE BORN: Ecclesiastes 3:2 His journey toward the new life began on Wednesday, August 19, 1959. “Wayne” was born in Flint, Michigan to the parents of Morris and Doris Gilbert. A TIME TO BE SAVED: Ecclesiastes 3:3 He grew up attending Foss Avenue Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Dr. Avery Aldridge where he confessed hope in Jesus Christ. While being a member of Foss Avenue Baptist Church, he fulfilled his passion of being on the basketball team. He later casted his lot and became a member of Second Chance Church under the leadership of Rev. Derrick A. Aldridge. A TIME TO BE TRAINED: Ecclesiastes 3:19 Wayne attended Flint Community Public Schools starting at Pierson Elementary, Bryant Jr. High School, and graduated from Flint Northwestern High School in 1977. He continued his education by attending and graduating from Davenport University (formally known as) Detroit College of Business, with an Associate’s Degree in Business. A TIME TO LABOR: Genesis 3:19 He was employed by the City of Flint, working in the Traffic Engineering Department until his health declined and was no longer able to continue his employment. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, and spending quality time hanging out with his “bruthas.” Wayne, had an old-soul and quiet demeanor, not selfish, but always willing to help others. A TIME TO REST…...A TIME OF PEACE…...Ecclesiastes 3:2, 8 Wayne reached the end of his journey and made his transition to his new life an home on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Hurley Medical Center-Flint. Wayne Gilbert leaves to cherish his memory: three sisters, D’Eirtre (Dee) Gilbert of Flint, MI, Terri Gilbert Tomlinson and Shervetta (Andre) Lewis, all of Clarksville, TN; two aunts, Priscilla Jones and Marksville, LA and Olivia Dorsey-Hodge of Pontiac, MI; nieces, Eboni L. West, Anatacia (Ana) Tomlinson, Kiah and Kiana West and Nevaeh Porter, all of Clarksville, TN; nephews, Andre’ (Shanita) Lewis II, Xavier Missick, Uriah Lewis, all of San Antonio, TX, Cory Gilbert, Carlos Lewis, Corey Manuel Smith and Jaden Gilbert, all of Clarksville, TN; a host of cousins, family and friends survive including special friends, Vincent Stallings (his “brutha” from another mother) and the Stallings family, Andrea Jones, Min. Joseph (Sheila) Gaines and David Brazil. Wayne Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Doris Gilbert; grandparents, Booker T. and Clotile Ester, Shelton and Albertha Gilbert; and brother-in-law, Fernando Tomlinson. The family would like to express special thanks to Hurley Medical Center nurses, doctors and staff, McLaren-Flint ICU, Pastor Derrick A. Aldridge and Second Chance Church.
