NICHOLS, Sis. Dorothy - Age 74, passed away, Monday, August 13, 2012 at Heartland Health Care-Fostorian Manor in Flushing, MI. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 1610 W. Pierson Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor James Kennedy officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd. Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Nichols will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 1-8 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Dorothy L. Nichols “Granny” was born October 4, 1937 in Augusta, Arkansas, the daughter of Leona Morris and Alec King. Dorothy attended Carver H.S., where she was an excellent student and lettered in basketball. After attending Arkansas Baptist University, she moved to Flint, Michigan and married Freddie L. Nichols. While in Flint she obtained an Associate Degree and worked at Jefferson and Stevenson Elementary. Dorothy finished her educational career at Whaley Children’s Center. She was an avid reader that enjoyed all types of puzzles and arts and crafts. Sister Nichols was a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she was also an active Choir member. She was a member of the Big Sisters of Greater Flint, The Greater Flint Afro American Hall of Fame Secretary (inductee), Northwestern High School Booster Club, and CMI Choir. Sis. Dorothy L. Nichols “Granny” leaves to cherish her memories: 2 sons, Roy V. (Velma) Nichols of Flint and Gary W. (Florence) Nichols of Missouri City, TX; mother, Leona Morris; 7 grandchildren, Mario (Ciara) Nichols of Flint, Tomika Bailey of Columbus, GA, DeOndre (Meggan), RaShad (Megan), Armaad (Tasha) Nichols, all of Flint, Onja (Adrian) Brunswick, Gary “Deuce” (Breanna) Nichols of Houston, TX; 14 great-grandchildren; aunt, Edith Morris of Detroit, MI; special cousins, Carolyn (Joseph) Allen, Dena (Dorian) Crawford, Paulette (Aprille, Dionne and Chris) Dozier, Yvonne (Andria, Eric) Taylor; close family friends, Eric Harvey and Fred Cheatom; special friends, Ruth Daniels, Sallie Humble, Vincie McCain, Marie Sanders and Ann Haywood. Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie L. Nichols; and father, Alec King. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Heartland Healthcare Fosterian.
