CAMPBELL, Mr. Clarence Charles, Sr., "Poppa" - Age 87, of Flint, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Brian's House in Davison. Family hour will be held at 10 a.m., April 21 (Monday) at the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle St., with funeral services commencing at 11 a.m. Rev. Woody Etherly II officiating, Dr. A.J. Pointer, Pastor. Burial will be in Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd., in Holly. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church at 10 a.m. Mr. Campbell will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10a.m.-8p.m. Sunday (April 20) with family present from 3-6pm. Mr. Clarence Charles "Poppa" Campbell, Sr., was a man of incredible strength, gentle spirit, great wisdom and faith. He was known for his unwavering love and devotion to his family. Clarence was born April 2, 1921, in Montezuma, Ga., the son of the late Hardwick and Eula (Terrell) Campbell. He moved to Flint at an early age. He attended Flint Public Schools, graduating from Northern High School, class of 1939. He also attended Flint Junior College. On August 24, 1942, Clarence married Rose Holliday. Their union would last more than 65 years. In December 1942, Clarence answered our nation's call to service rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and proudly served in the European Theatre in Italy during World War II. Clarence retired in 1977 from AC Spark Plug as a production supervisor with 36 years of service. Clarence enjoyed spending time with his family at his cottage at Shay Lake in Tuscola County, motor trips and watching sports on television. Clarence and Rose were blessed with six children. Gail Williams (Charlie), Flint; Clarence (Bettina) Campbell, Rankin; Madeline Campbell, Flint; Carole (James) Williams, Ada, Mich.; Cheryl Campbell, Stafford, Va.; Robert (Wanda) Campbell, Fenton; and special daughter: Dionne (Nathaniel) Elliott, Charlotte, N.C. Seven grandchildren: Terrance (Regina) Campbell, TaMara Campbell, LCpl. JoVon (Jessica) Rutherford of USMC, Andre Rutherford, Michelle Williams, Garrett Williams and Jonathan Campbell. Seven great-grand children: La'Tia Williams, Rhaiana Campbell, Moneshia Campbell, Torrance Campbell, Alexis Elliott, Jay'ln Rutherford and Tyler Campbell. He is also survived by two sisters: Essie Lattimore and Catherine Williams; one sister-in-law, Marion Hudspeth; many nieces, nephews and cousins; the Maybury Avenue neighbors Johnny and Janie Goddard, the Cheeks family and Julia Epps; Special thanks to Cynthia Higgins and George Rutherford. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Crestmont Extended Care Facility, Fenton; Genesys Regional Medical Center and Brian's House, Davison; the Metropolitan Church family; God's Tabernacle of Truth Church family; and First Community AME Church family, Grand Rapids. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law Rosa Georgia and father-in-law Ernest Myers Holliday; sisters Abby Byars and Eula (Sissy) Dew; and several nieces and nephews.
