Mr. Chester Hughes

HUGHES, JR., Mr. Chester - Age 73, transitioned from this life, Sunday, October 6, 2013 at McLaren-Flint. Memorial Service 10 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3502 Lapeer Rd., for the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., under the auspices of the Flint Alumni Chapter and Masonic Order Services conducted by the Eureka Lodge #16, with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Marvin A. Jennings, Sr., Host Pastor, Pastor Rodney Ellison, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Association, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Chester Hughes, Jr., was born September 28, 1940 in Friars Point, Mississippi to Annie Laura (Hardy) Hughes and the late Chester Hughes, Sr. He was a faithful and loyal member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and sang in the Male and Gospel Choirs. He received a Bachelor Degree from Jackson State University and a Master Degree from Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Hughes was a premier educator, with a passion for improving the lives of children, as a teacher, Band Director, Assistant Principal, Principal and Director of Adult Education. He worked diligently for 41 years in education and retired from Beecher School District in 2004. Mr. Hughes enjoyed his retirement traveling with his family, golfing, and working at Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home. He was affiliated with numerous community service organizations; a pass board member of the Red Cross, a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., on the local, Provincial where he served as the Provincial Polemarch for many years and National levels, active member of Jackson State University Alumni Association, a member of Eureka Lodge #16 PHA, Eureka Lodge Glee Club, Saginaw Valley Consistory #71, Grand Inspector General of the 33, last degree of Ancient, Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry PHA, and Past Potentae of Oman Temple #72. His memories will be forever cherished by: his loving wife, of 50 years, Myra Hughes; two daughters, DeWana (Dr. Bill) McCarty of Winchester, CA and Chelonde Hughes of Flint; two adorable grandchildren, Ostyn McCarty of Washington, DC (Howard University) and Brooklen McCarty of Winchester, CA; mother, Annie Laura Wilson of Beaumont, TX; brother, Gene (Helen) Hughes of Milwaukee, WI; sister, Linda (Jimmie) Lonnett of Beaumont, TX; two uncles; seven brothers-in-law; nine sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, and his Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church family and friends.
