Mr. Alvin "BIG AL" Smith

SMITH, Mr. Alvin "BIG AL" - Age 53, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2017 at Hurley Medical Center. Family, friends, colleagues, and students are invited to a celebration commemorating the life of Mr. Smith Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Holmes S.T.E.M Academy, 6602 Oxley Dr. There will be no public viewing. Alvin’s journey on this road of life began on September 30, 1963 in Flint, Michigan. Born to the late Leroy and Elnora Smith, Alvin grew up in Flint where he accepted Christ at an early age. After earning his diploma from Flint Central High School in 1981, Alvin moved south to attend Jackson State University. In 1988, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education degree. When Alvin returned to Flint in 1991, he began working in the Flint Community Schools and he earned his Master of Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University in 2007. Affectionately known as “Mr. Smith”, Alvin was a role model, motivator, respected colleague, and lifelong friend to all of the students and staff who had the privilege of knowing him as an educator. Lovingly known as “Big AL” to his family and friends, Alvin never met a stranger, had a heart of gold, and he lived his life on his terms! Alvin began resting in God’s loving care on August 20, 2017 and leaves to forever cherish his memory: wife, DeLynn; 2 sons, Michael Smith and Brandon Woods; 3 daughters, Alicea (Justin) Hill, Arianna Smith and Alanna Smith; 2 grandchildren, Bailey Smith and Carson Hill; father and mother-in-law, Anthony and Jean Lucas of Grand Rapids, MI; 5 brothers, Floyd (Mildred) Robinson of Pinola, MS, Leroy (Betty) Smith, Larry Smith, James Smith and Melvin (Tammy) Smith, all of Flint; 2 brothers-in-law, Anthony (Tony) Lucas Jr. and Alan Clark, both of Grand Rapids, MI; 4 sisters, Ruby (Charles) of Jackson, MS, Cheryl (Jesse Jr.) Wilson, Linda Smith, all of Flint and Gladys (George) Winfield of Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law, Lisa Clark of Grand Rapids, MI; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and special friends, Edgar Jackson and Carlos Gonzalez. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Elnora Smith; sister, Joyce Lane; niece, Stephanie Mackey; and sister-in-law, LaShelle Lucas.
