FLIPPEN, Mr. William O. - Age 77, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at his residence. Family hour 11:00 AM Friday, August 20, 2021 at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:30 AM. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 11:00 AM Friday. Mr. Flippen will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM -6:00 PM Thursday, with family present to receive friends from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM. Mr. William Oscar “Flip” Flippen was born December 12, 1943 in Gallatin, Tennessee, the son of Ray Field and Nellie Frances Flippen. William grew up in Flint, Michigan and graduated from Flint Southwestern High School, “Class of 1962.” William accepted Christ at an early age; attending Bethel United Methodist Church. On February 2, 1971 he became a faithful member of the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Odis A. Floyd and Pastor Patrick W. Sanders Sr. William served as Trustee, Member of the Inspirational Voices and was the Bass Guitarist from 1971-1975. William had a love for music and singing. He was an original member of both The Paramount Gospel Singers and The Flint Cavaliers. As an original member of The Flint Cavaliers, he wrote 2 songs that many loved to hear them sing when traveling across the United States; one being titled “He Brought Me A Long Way.” William worked for General Motors Corporation for over 30 years before retiring in January of 1995. He loved spending time with his family, singing, fishing, playing Dominos and barbecuing. William was a businessman and co-owner of The Golden Fry Restaurant. He was a loving, passionate, caring, encouraging, confidante and father figure to many. William was truly the “G.O.A.T.” Mr. William Oscar Flippen leaves to cherish his memory: devoted wife of 58 years, Mary E. Flippen whom he affectionately called “Turtle”; 3 daughters, Tracy Flippen, both of Flint, Sherry (Phil) Hodge of Flint Township, MI and Nichelle (Clifton) Gallon of Murfreesboro, TN; 3 grandchildren, ReNeisha Johnson, Jasmyn Barnes, all of Murfreesboro, TN and Caleb Hodge of Flint Township, MI; sister-in-law, Bernice Abston of Grand Blanc, MI; 2 brothers-in-law, Rodney (Kathy) Harris and Lovert Moore, all of Flint; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including special nephew, Ray (Lisa) Flippen of Dallas, TX; special cousins, Mary Frances Turner of Gallatin, TN, Allen (Earline) Bragg of Flint; special niece, Brenda (Michael) Jefferson of Saginaw, TX; God-daughters, Debra Lawson of Southfield, MI, LaShantel (Adrian) Robertson of Johnson City, NY, Angela Toliver, Shuntay Lakes, Laura Kindle and Arnetta Ingram, all of Flint; god-son, Pastor Kenneth Gillard; god-grandchildren, T’Ja Page and J’Lynn Williams; special friends, Alfred Fowlkes, Tyrone Maynie, Jeffrey (Arjetta) LaValley, Minnie Ozier, Ann Rankin and Estelle Lever. Mr. Flippen was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Field and Nellie Frances Flippen; siblings, James Ray Flippen, Maggie Sue Louis and Mack Arthur Flippen.
