COTTON, Mr. Spence - Age 84, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Divine Caring in Grand Blanc, MI. Family hour 1:30 PM Monday, February 7, 2022 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM, Pastor Lynn Jackson, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Association, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 1:30 PM Monday. Mr. Cotton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM Sunday with family present from 1:00PM-3:00PM. A Time to be Born…” Mr. Spence Cotton was born August 17, 1937, in Macon, Mississippi to the late Grant and Ida (Goodwin) Cotton. “A child…” Spence was the youngest of his siblings and pampered by his parents and older siblings but taught strong spiritual values and responsibility. His mother even hosted bible study in their home. He attended Macon public schools where he was a star football player during his high school years. After high school, he relocated to Flint, Michigan for job opportunities and became an employee of General Motors Corporation. He retired after 41 years of service with numerous accolades and recognition for his outstanding loyalty, work ethic, and contributions. “Love and Marriage”… Spence married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Ruby K. Porter on May 12, 1957. To this union two sons were born, Spence Cotton, Jr., and Derek Cotton. Spence was a very strong, compassionate, and loving husband, son, brother, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, and friend. “To know him was to love him.” He dearly loved and was devoted to his family and friends—especially his wife, sons, and grandsons. He was a faithful member of Quinn Chapel, African Methodist Episcopal Church for over 50 years, serving on the Men’s Usher Board. On January 29, 2022, Spence went home to be with the Lord. He leaves in God’s loving care: his wife of 65 years, Ruby; son, Derek (Lorri), Columbia, TN; 2 grandsons, Leland Yarborough-Cotton of Smyrna, DE and Derek Cotton II of Atlanta, GA; 2 step-granddaughters, Meghan Carter of Murfreesboro, TN and Morgan of Columbia, TN; sister, Agnes May of Alliance, OH; 2 sisters-in-law, Delois Porter of Macon, MS and Ida Porter of Jackson, MS; 2 brothers-in-law, Paul Porter of Macon, MS and John (Katherine) Porter of Chicago, IL; many nieces and nephews to cherish his memory, along with special friends, Joe Webb and Alphonzo Bowe, Sr. Spence was preceded in death by his son, Spence Cotton Jr.; father, Grant Cotton Sr.; mother, Ida Cotton; 6 brothers, Lee, Anderson, Kellar, Grant Jr., Merrick “William” Sr., and Sammie Cotton; 2 sisters, Mary Cotton and Herron Winston. The family would like to extend special thanks to his nieces and nephews, Ida Stewart, Merrick and Thrisa Cotton, Gloria and Charles Banks, Estina and Tina L. Mosley, Sharon Cotton and Linda and David Gibson; neighbors, Michael and Ashley Coleman; McLaren Neuro ICU, Divine Caring Hospice, The Medical Team and Heavenly Hope Home Care. Our beloved, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, and friend will forever be remembered in our hearts for his kind and loving spirit, and the legacy and great example of family devotion that he has left with us all; and everyone he touched while here on earth.
