JAMES, Ms. Mildred - Age 69, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at McLaren-Flint. Family hour 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 24, 2022 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Minister Raymond Nelson officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 North Dort Hwy. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Funeral Home, 10:30 AM Tuesday. Ms. James will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM Monday. Ms. Mildred James was born in Tylertown, Mississippi. She was a longtime resident of Flint, MI; she worked 38 years as a Flint Public School Teacher. Ms. James was a member of Vernon Chapel AME Church and the church Bell Choir. A graduate of Flint Public Schools, Ms. James continued her education at Western Michigan and Michigan State Universities, earning degrees from both schools. Ms. James was an active member of the Flint community, earned numerous awards, and participated in countless organizations and initiatives across the city including Flint’s chapter of Jack & Jill of America, the Flint Olympian and CANUSA Games Executive Committee, Flint Olympian and CANUSA Games Swim Coach, Flint Public Schools swim coach and swim teacher, the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard and Lifeguard Trainer, the Special Olympics, and was an avid clarinet musician and swimmer. Ms. Mildred James is survived by: sisters, Patty J. (Jim) Oehmke of East Lansing, MI and Etta Marie (late Cail) Jones of New Orleans, LA; brother, Robert E. James of Lansing, MI; granddaughter, Ariya James, Flint; uncle, Jimmie Conerly of New Orleans, LA; aunts, Georgia Lee Conerly of Detroit, MI and Kathleen Conerly of Tylertown, MS; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless other relatives and friends including, Lyria Smith, Geraldine Lee, Evelyn & Henry Flowers, Ladale Woods, Vee Stewart, Mr. & Mrs. Sylvester Collins of Metro Flint, and Raymond Johnson, Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. James was preceded in death by her son, Wilford D. “Shawn” James; parents, Wilford and Geraldine James; and numerous aunts and uncles. The family would like to express a special Thanks to Ladale Woods, Henry & Evelyn Flowers, and all of those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assist Mildred, Shawn and Ariya.
