TYSON, Mrs. Lavada - Age 85, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022 at her residence. Family hour 1:30 PM Tuesday, February 8, 2022, from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 1:30 PM Tuesday. Mrs. Tyson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Monday. Mrs. LaVada Tyson, affectionately known as “Lou”, was born November 21, 1936 in Brinkley, Arkansas, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Alvin and Allean Love. Mrs. Tyson moved to Flint, Michigan in 1954 making her mark as the first African American Waitress with Masonic Temple Dining Room remaining employed there for over 30 years. LaVada first met her husband, Phynis in 1954 while hanging out at the local softball field. They later married in December 1958. She was a devoted wife who took great pleasure in sports (especially playing softball) and having family and friends over, where you can guarantee there would be a pot of her famous greens and fried chicken. Mrs. Tyson loved her Blues and on any Saturday morning she’s in the kitchen singing and “doing her exercise” as she called it. Mrs. LaVada Tyson departed this life surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at her residence. Mrs. LaVada Tyson leaves to cherish her memory: loving husband of 63 years, Phynis Tyson of Flint; 2 sons, Gregory (Verlene) Love of Moro, AR and Ray (Maxine) Larry of Slidell, LA; 2 daughters, Beverly (David) Lewis of Swartz Creek, MI and Alesia (Cedric) Woods of Mt. Morris, MI; brother, Warren Love of Las Vegas, NV; 4 sisters, Geneva Presnall of Flushing, MI, Versilee Brown, Earlene (Leon) Wesson, all of Flint and Joyce McKissik of Cleveland, OH; 3 brothers-in-law, Lloyd Tyson of Atlanta, TX, Clavon Tyson-Bey of Pontiac, MI and Jimmy (Sharon) Tyson of Flint Twp., MI; 4 sisters-in-law, Bettie Tyson-Jones of Flint, Marvis Mitchell of Pontiac, MI, Thelma McKinney and Mildred Tyson, both of Detroit, MI; 19 grandchildren, Johnathon (Heather Dow) Phelps of Nashville, TN, Monica (Greg) Smalley, DaQuandra Lewis, both of Grand Blanc, MI, JaQuetta (Chris Bell) Tyson of Los Angeles, CA, K’Dijah Tyson of Flint, Gregory (Elonda) Love Jr. of Palastine, AR, Shavon (Ken) Lowe, Angie Metcalf of Brinkley, AR, Mario Love of Wheatley, AR, Nikita Mays, Nakia Howard, Detrick Larry, all of Houston, TX, Elizabeth Larry of Slidell, LA, Michael Harris and Tina Harris, both of Jonesboro, AR; 32 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including best friends, Cathrine “Cat” Johnson and Louise Tillmon. Mrs. Tyson was preceded in death by her daughters, Valerie Tyson and Barbara Bell; son, Phillip Tyson; grandsons, D’Andre Phelps, Justin Love and Demetrius Lewis; parents, Alvin and Allean Love; sisters, Juanita Stansberry, Lannie Ruth Johnson, Pearlene Henderson and Charlene Love; best friends, Shirley Howell and Mattie Jackson.The family would like to express special thanks to the Tyson, Gillard, McChester, Howell and Tillmon families along with McLaren Palliative and Hospice Care.
