MABERRY, Mrs. Laura Ann - Age 79, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021 at McLaren-Flint. Family hour 10:00 AM Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at The Church of God, 1513 Kent St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Pastor Lawrence Washington Sr., officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy., Mt. Morris, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:00 AM Tuesday. Mrs. Maberry will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM Monday, with family present from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM to receive friends. Laura Ann Maberry was born on October 27, 1942 in Benton, Mississippi, the daughter of Phillip and Octavia Stubberfield. Laura was one of seven “Stubberfield” children. In July 1964, Laura married Joseph P. Maberry in Yazoo County, MS. A year later, they moved to Chicago, Illinois. In 1970 they moved to Flint, Michigan and called it home for the remainder of their lives. Sister Laura accepted the Lord as her personal savior as a child in Mississippi. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) organization while living in Mississippi and Illinois. In 1970 after moving to Flint, Michigan, Sister Laura joined Ruth Street Church of God under the leadership of the late Pastor Namon Marshall Sr. Sister Laura was a founding member of The Church of God, established in 1980, under the leadership of the late Pastor Roy Bibbs Jr. She continued her spiritual walk under the leadership of Pastor Lawrence Washington Sr., current pastor of The Church of God Kent Street. Sister Laura was a faithful servant in the church. Sister Laura served as the church’s financial secretary for over 30 years. She was the first Vacation Bible School (VBS) Director and served faithfully in that role for many years. Sister Laura was an active member of the Women’s Department, Pastor’s Aide (Women of Zion), Missionary/Teacher’s Ministry, and Program Committee. She taught Sunday School and served on The Church of God Kent Street’s Executive Board. Sister Laura was a strong supporter of Christian Education and coordinated the Annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon whose proceeds supported Vacation Bible School each summer. She sang in the Adult Choir for a short time; leading the song “Reach Out and Touch the Lord”. Sister Laura was formally educated in Yazoo County, MS, and earned the honor of valedictorian for the 1963 graduating class of Linwood High School. She later received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Michigan-Flint and a Master of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Sister Laura retired from Flint Community Schools after a successful teaching career that lasted more than 30 years. She spent the majority of her career teaching at Cody Elementary School. She also taught at Martin, Summerfield, Eisenhower and McKinley Schools. Sister Laura Maberry was blessed to share 40 years of marital bliss with her husband Joseph Maberry, who preceded her in death. She was a loving mother to her only daughter, Kimberly Ann Maberry and special nephew, who was like a son to her, Dexter Johnson. She was a caring grandmother to all five of her grandchildren. Laura Ann Maberry leaves to cherish sweet memories: her only daughter, Kimberly A. Maberry of Flint; nephew, Dexter (Codeona) Johnson of Grand Blanc, MI; 5 grandchildren, Lauren, Marzel Jr., Markus, Mackenzie, Micah Paylor and their father, Marzel Paylor Sr. of Conyers, GA; great-nephew, Dekai Johnson; brother:, Ernest (Velma) Stubberfield; sister, Georgia (Lonnie) Johnson, all of Chicago, IL; sisters-in-law, Logie Stubberfield of Schaumburg, IL, Delores Maberry of Burton, MI, Earnestine Maberry of Jackson, MS; brothers-in-law, Earl (Herticene) Maberry Jr. of Jackson, MS, and Calvin (Betty) Maberry Sr. of Flint; special nieces, Vicky Garrett and Diana Wright; special great-niece, Tasha Donald, all of Flint; god-children, Maurice Dantzler of Memphis, TN, Jonique S. Donald, Toya Smith, Quanda Moss, Antoinette Abron, all of Flint Erica Johnson of Chicago, IL; special friend and prayer partner, Mother Doris Collins; special friends, Missionary Margaret Gonzalez, Pastor Napoleon (Gladys) Earl, Mother Vivian Offutt and Daisy Motley; a host of relatives and friends. Sister Maberry was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Joseph Maberry; parents, Phillip and Octavia Stubberfield; siblings, James Stubberfield, Lucy Mae Digby, Earlene Johnson and Leroy Stubberfield; and close friend, Mother Ella Whiteside. The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation for all the love, prayers and condolences received during their time of bereavement.
