BOYLER-MATHUS, Ms. Hilda P. - Age 83, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at her residence. Family hour 1:30PM Saturday, January 22, 2022 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM. Pastor George Wilkerson, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the chapel 1:30 PM Saturday. Ms. Boyler-Mathus will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home.If you have missed Hilda for a while, it is because she was earning her wings. She completed her journey on January 7, 2022. Hilda P. Boyler-Mathus was born July 8, 1938 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina to the late Paul and Ida Pendergraft. Hilda graduated from Lincoln High School in Chapel Hill where she played the saxophone and was a majorette in the marching band. Soon after graduation, Hilda moved to Washington, DC to be closer to her sister. While in DC, Hilda graduated from Cortez Peters Business College and went on to pursue a career with the Federal Government Department of Interior Geological Survey. During her stay in Washington, DC, she married Robert Boyler, Sr. and to this union, they were blessed with a son and daughter, Robert T. Boyler ll and Apryl D. Boyler. The family later relocated to Flint, Michigan where Hilda worked with her husband in their men’s clothing stores; Town Squire and House of Slacks. She also taught in the Flint Community School system and worked at General Motors Institute (now known as Kettering University). In 1985, Hilda moved to Lake Orion, Michigan where she continued her employment with General Motors, found love again and married the late Thurman J. Mathus. After a career with General Motors she return back to her passion of teaching in the Rochester Hills School system, where she retired in 2008. Hilda was not all work and no play. She enjoyed word search puzzles, baking sweets and watching football. Hilda was a season ticketholder at the “Big House” Michigan football games and attended the Rose Bowl in 2005; as a Flint resident, she was a member of Vernon Chapel AME Church and sung in the Chancel Choir and later became a member of Newman AME Church in Pontiac, Michigan where she was involved in missionary work, their summer youth camp and feeding the homeless on Fridays until her health began to decline. She was a member of the Red Hatters Society, the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club. Hilda P. Boyler-Mathus leaves to cherish her memory: children, Robert T. Boyler II and Apryl D. Boyler; former husband / friend, Robert T. Boyler Sr.; sister, Annie P. Turner; niece, Rev. Lolita P. Turner; special cousins, Gale Wilson, Janet (Thomas) Crawley, the Stroud and Pendergraft family. She also leaves her beloved fur grandsons, Showers and Scar; special friends, Lillian Henry, Ella Moore, Linda Clemons, Rev. Donna H. Vinson (Steven), Amy “Boo” Sadler (Ted), Theresa Bilicki (David), Peggy Washington, Raynette Lyles (Charles) and those from her two AME Churches. The family would like to thank her loving caregivers, Sheila Kirkendolph and Hazel Holland who came to Hilda’s aid during her health challenges. Zelton Johnson DDS, hair stylists, Mary Williams and LaVonna Evans, Cassandra Pressley/Tranquility House staff and the Valencia Drive neighbors for their support.
