BROOKS, Ms. Helena Montrose - Age 73, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022, at Regency at Grand Blanc, Grand Blanc, MI. Family hour 10:30 AM Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Canaan Baptist Church, 910 E. Gillespie St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Charles E. Roots, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Saturday. Ms. Brooks will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday.Ms. Helena Montrose Brooks was born July 29, 1948, in Kernersville, NC to parents Isaac and Ruby Brooks. Helena was a resident of Flint, MI. She attended Flint Northern High School and graduated in 1968. She went on to take nursing classes while working at Hurley Medical Center as a dietary food service worker. She retired from Hurley in 2009 after 39 years of service. Helena was the matriarch of the family and was often referred to as the “funny aunt” or the “cool granny”. She was also affectionately called “Annabelle”, “Big Mama”, “Big Shirley” and “Granny”. Helena was well known for feeding everyone in the neighborhood and making people laugh with her witty humor and dirty jokes. Some of her favorite things to do were playing her daily lottery, completing crossword puzzles and watching television, especially old westerns, shows from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, Jerry Springer, Judge Judy and Judge Mathis. Helena enjoyed traveling and going different places, including back home to North Carolina and on her annual sisters’ trip. Some of her greatest joys were listening to gospel music, talking on the phone, being in “the know” and letting you know she was “in the know". She loved, loved, loved being surrounded by family and friends, especially her daughter and grandsons. Helena leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Tanisha Lattimore of Flint, MI, grandsons Tyrone and Tyrese Smith of Flint, MI, siblings Pam (Anthony) Keyes of Galloway, OH, Anthony Brooks of Flint, MI, Edward Brooks of Flint, MI, Kimberlee (Ryan) LeFear of Flushing, MI and Cassandra Brooks of Flushing, MI; nephews Ernest Jr (Tomika) Brooks, Anthony II (Monica) Keyes, D’Mitri LeFear, Quentin LeFear, JaNairo (Tori) LeFear, Desmond Brooks, Brandon Kinzer, Christopher Taylor and Malik Brooks; nieces EToya Moore, Roshonda Brooks, Angela (Eric) Miles, Alicia (Bobby) Watt and Le’Sha (Gerald) Rose; God granddaughter JayShauna Riley, sister-in-law Earlie Brooks, Tanisha’s significant other and Helena’s private chef Norman Collins and a host of other nephews, nieces, family members and friends. Helena was preceded in death by her daughter Baby Girl Brooks, parents Isaac and Ruby Brooks, grandparents Eddie and Minnie Brooks and Roy and Irene Hairston, brother Ernest Brooks, aunt Josephine Townsend, nieces Monique Brooks and Alexis Keyes, special friends Sandra Jefferson and Edward Lattimore and other aunts and uncles. The family would like to thank Pastor Charles E. Roots and the entire Canaan Baptist Church family. They would also like to express their sincere appreciation to Nurse Practitioner Jamie Braden, Hurley Medical Center, Regency of Grand Blanc and Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home for the care and concern shown to Helena. She is with God now and can finally take her rest.
