He accepted Christ at an early age at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Meridian, MS. He met and married Bertha Lee Thompson on November 16th, 1959. To this union they had 5 children, Twana, Cynthia, George Jr., Virginia and Eric. George moved north to find work and ended up working several jobs before ending up at a fabricating company called Marquette Fabricating Company. During the 1968 riots in Detroit, he along with the owners did the work of 200 employees to keep the business afloat. The owners of Marquette set George up with his own metal fabricating business, Burns Fabricating Company in Flint, MI because of his hard work and loyalty. The business relocated to Detroit, MI in 1978, where they fabricated metal racks for companies like GM, Ford and Chrysler. George retired in the early 2000s and could be found working at Coleman Tire Service on North Saginaw Street. This was not because he needed to work there, but because he had to stay busy. He was very well respected by all who frequented the shop. He was a hard-worker and loved helping others. George enjoyed anything that meant he would be outside. This included hunting, fishing, and most of all gardening. He was proud of his harvest which included (but not limited to) plums, grapes, peaches, green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, collard, and mustard greens and so much more. He was affectionately known as Farmer George in the neighborhood due to him sharing his fruits and vegetables. George was a jack of all trades and could fix almost anything. If he didn’t know, he would figure it out. He enjoyed being competitive with his friends and family in bowling, playing cards, etc. He even played video games like Duck Hunt or Wii Bowling, often beating his grandsons to their dismay. In 2015, an unfortunate accident took away George’s ability to walk but not his determination. He was convinced that he was going to walk again and spent time working towards that goal. He did not let his wheelchair stop him from going, doing or moving. George joined New Heaven Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Jenkins. He loved going to church and would say how he was able to understand the bible because of the way his Pastor explained it.
