Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 1:30 PM Friday. Mr. Mitchell will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Thursday. Gary Wallace Mitchell Sr. was born January 20, 1952, in Clairton, Pennsylvania, to Mr. James Robert Mitchell Sr. and Mrs. Margaret Louise Mitchell. He moved to Flint, Michigan with his family at the age of four and was educated in the Flint Community School System. Gary coached little league baseball when he and his siblings were growing up for about three years. He was a great coach. While in high school at Flint Northern, he was on the wrestling and football teams. He graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1970. Gary worked at the DMV, the Flint Police Department as a Forensics Photographer, and he also worked at General Motors for many years before retiring. Gary grew up attending Pilgrim Temple Church of God in Christ, Pastor Leo J. Jackson. Gary also joined in fellowship with Victory Miracle Temple, Pastor Emmanuel Johnson Sr. He later became a member of Freedom Temple Church of God in Christ, Pastor Charles Williams which is when he rededicated his life back to The Lord. Gary was called to the ministry to teach the Word of God, and that he did with a great anointing. There is no secret that he was very profound in his wisdom and knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. Through the help of the Holy Spirit, he literally uncovered some of the deepest treasures of God’s Word. Every conversation he held included his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in one way or another. There was no denying his love for The Lord. Gary loved family very much. If you were in his “daily text chain” consider yourself blessed. He texted scriptures, sermons, devotions, music, encouraging words, and every now as then he threw in a good joke to make our days brighter. He often spoke well of his siblings and how proud he was of his four sons. Gary was intelligent, mild-spirited, very kindhearted, and had a great sense of humor. He loved reading (especially The Bible), writing, drawing, watching football, eating popcorn, playing dominoes, and board games, to which he crowned himself the King of Scrabble, as his sons recall while growing up. Mr. Gary W. Mitchell Sr. leaves to cherish his memories: four sons, Mr. Scott A. Mitchell (Flint, MI) , Minister Gary W. Mitchell Jr. and wife Rasheeda Mitchell (Flint, MI), Mr. Maurice L. Mitchell (Flint, MI), Pastor Raymond D.
