McCovery, Mrs. Ethel Mae - Age 72, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday May, 22, 2021 from Higher Quality of Life Ministries, 5601 N. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Elder Clarence Baldwin officiating. Interment Gracelawn Cemetery, 5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church at 10:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. McCovery will lie in state in thee Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday. Mrs. Ethel Mae (McGowan) McCovery was born May 8, 1949 in Clarke County, Alabama. The daughter of William and Lucille McGowan. Mrs. McCovery attended Clarke County Public Schools and she attended Cedar Fork Church with her family. Mrs. McCovery met the love of her life James McCovery in 1972, they were married in 1975 and moved to Flint, Michigan in 1979. She was a family woman who devoted her life to taking care of her children, grandchildren, and siblings. Mrs. McCovery had a heart for people, and you could always count on her to have big pots of food on the stove cooking. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, fishing, listening to music, dancing, and talking with her friends and family. Over the years Mrs. McCovery has allowed her light to shine in the lives of others, her youngest sister Marilyn McGowan raising her from infancy to a wonderful woman, her great niece Nicarria and nephew Khimaal adopting them when their grandmother passed away (Mrs. McCovery sister-n-law, Elisa Caruthers). Mrs. Ethel Mae McCovery leaves to cherish her memory: 4 sons, James McGowan, Alonzo McCovery (Melissa), Khimaal McCovery and Michael McGowan; 3 daughters, Mrs. Savoiya Williams (Harman) and Nicarria McCovery, all of Flint and Rochelle Baldwin of Mississippi; husband and best friend, Mr. James McCovery; 35 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Lewis (Phebe) McGowan and Willie Patterson both of Pascagoula MS, Robert McGowan of Flint and William Carl Jr. of Mobile AL; 6 sisters, Mary Gwen of Gautier, MS., Elizabeth Jones of Pascagoula, MS, Lucille Snell (William Bettis Jr.) of Clark County, AL, Hattie Patterson of Birmingham AL, Marilyn McGowan of Flint and Michelle McInnis of Moss Point, MS; 5 brothers-in-law, Leslie (Eloise) McCovery, Willie (Dorothy) McCovery, David (Georgette) McCovery, Robert (Denise) McCovery, and Sherman McCovery; 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Arthur) Burns, Louise (Melvin) Gillespie; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends survive, including special friends, Cynthia Walker, Roylene Bennett and Jean Jackson. Mrs. McCovery was preceded in death by 2 sons, Willie and Adrian McGowan; parents, William and Lucille McGowan; and sister, Diane Barnette. The family would like to express special thanks to family and friends who unselfishly gave their time, attention, gifts, and most of all prayers for Mrs. McCovery and her family. Thanks to the medical teams at McLaren Medical Center and Beaumont Hospital for the care provided.
