SWEENEY, Mother Ernestine V. - Age 86, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 at McLaren-Flint. Family hour 10:30 AM Monday, November 8, 2021 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Pastor Sean Brown, Officiating. Interment Evergreen Cemetery, G-3415 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:30 AM Monday. Mother Sweeney will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM Sunday. Mrs. Ernestine V. Sweeney was born April 3, 1935 in Brooklyn, Lovejoy, Illinois, the daughter of Jacob Harris and Ida B. Johnson. Ernestine was educated in the Lovejoy School System, graduating as Class Valedictorian in 1952. She attended Illinois State Normal University from 1952-1953. Ernestine was one of the first of blacks to be accepted to attend and graduate from the De Paul Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO in 1956. She moved to Flint, Michigan and worked as a Staff Nurse intermittently at St. Joseph and Flint General Osteopathic Hospitals. In 1964, she was hired as the first black Registered Nurse at AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors Corporation, retiring as General Supervisor Regional Medical Flint after 29 years of service. Ernestine married Webster Sweeney Jr. on March 7, 1964. She became a member of Pilgrim Temple (currently Jackson Memorial Church Of God In Christ) in 1963. Being saved and filled with the Holy Ghost was the most rewarding and life changing experience. The teachings, guidance and principles earned helped to shape her life as a wife, mother, friend and confidant. Ernestine’s many hobbies including, reading, flea markets, rummaging, collecting old costume jewelry (especially Sarah Coventry), making hatpins, gift baskets and floral arrangements. Mrs. Ernestine V.
