On May 17, 1947, Flora Miller and Walter Williams welcomed their son, Barry Lloyd Williams to the world. Barry was born and raised in the City of Flint and committed his life to Christ at an early age as a member of the North Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church, now Fairhaven Seventh Day-Adventist Church. During his younger years, Barry was an energetic boy who enjoyed helping others. This servant mindset permeated all aspects of his adult life. After graduating from Flint Southwestern High School, Barry was drafted by the United States Army to serve as a conscientious objector medic during the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam, Barry was injured as he rescued and ultimately saved the life of a fellow soldier. Consequently, Barry was awarded the Purple Heart Medal because he was wounded in Vietnam and he also received the Silver Star Medal for valor in combat. When he returned from Vietnam, Barry married Lorelei Stack. Together they had two children, Marcia Michelle and Heidi Danielle. In 1973, Barry pursued his passion for helping others by joining the City of Flint Police Department. Officer Barry, as he was affectionally called, worked in a myriad of roles within the police department including being a member of the community police foot patrol team, serving as school liaison officer at Northwestern High and Holmes Middle Schools and supporting the African American Police League. Barry especially enjoyed working with his former police partner and special friend, Hiawatha Green. In 1985, Barry married Wallette Morse. During their 32 years of marriage, Barry and Wallette enjoyed traveling the world and fine dining. After retiring from the criminal justice system in 1997, he elevated his community impact by advocating for and building bridges between the community and the city as 5th Ward Council Person and Flint Charter Review Commission Member. In addition, he enjoyed moonlighting while experiencing, various places, the top of which where: the Whiting Auditorium and Rolette’s Skating Rink. Barry relished his special relationship with his younger brother, Robert, lovingly known as “Kitlee.” In his later years, Barry enjoyed serving as Sabbath School Superintendent, member of the treasury department, and aiding senior citizens at Fairhaven SDA Church. Since 2008, he bravely and optimistically battled cancer. Barry lived life to the fullest until the very end. Barry Lloyd Williams showed the world that the negative images and narratives often used to describe Black men are false through his display of responsibility, dedication, and love. Barry Lloyd Williams leaves to treasure his precious memory: 2 daughters, Marcia Williams and Heidi Williams; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Fredd, Jr., David Whitaker IV, and Madison Whitaker; 3 brothers, Wilson Williams, LaRon Williams, and Brian Williams; 2 sisters, Martha Williams and Gailya Hughes; sister-in-law, Angela Miller; special nieces, Angel White (Robert), Jessica Long (Derek), and Nyla Provost; 2 aunts, Vera Miller and Rosie (Miller) Louden; beloved uncle, William Miller (Delores); special aunt, Alma Tate; and a host of nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Barry was preceded in death by his mother, Flora Miller; father, Walter Williams; and brothers, Robert “Kitlee” Miller, Walter Williams Jr., and Craig Williams. The family is grateful for your prayers, love, phone calls and other expressions of concern shown during this time of bereavement. A special thank you to Chris Burrows, Carol Conner, Martha Dukes, Sharon Jackson, Cynthia Reid, Gloria Stuckey, the Welch Boulevard Community and the Fairhaven Seventh-Day Adventist Church family.
