William Calloway

CALLOWAY, Mr. William Dupree - Age 83, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2005 at Genesys Health Park. Family hour 10AM Friday, July 8, 2005 at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, 2101 Lippincott Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Pastor Ron L. Norris officiating. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, 5175 E. Bristol Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the home 9AM Friday. Mr. Calloway will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8PM Thursday. Mr. Calloway was a man of quiet power, who embraced his faith and openly shared deep love with his family. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, November 27, 1921, the son of Mattie Avery Hutchins-Pickett and William Dupree. Mr. Calloway attended St. Mark N&I Institute in Atlantic City, New Jersey. From there he worked with Hoffman Construction Agency of Birmingham, AL as a Commercial Artist. He entered the Army in 1941 and during his duty, Mr. Calloway received the American Defense Service Ribbon, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 4 bronze Battle Stars, the Philippine-Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze Battle Star, 6 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe and The Good Conduct Medal. When he was Honorably Discharged in 1945, he came to Flint, MI where he married his devoted and loving wife of 49 years, Vivian Wright. William worked for General Motors until his retirement and also for the Weather Bureau. Mr. William Calloway leaves to cherish his memory: special friend, Clara Winn; 2 sons, William D. (Sandra) Calloway, Jr. and David G. (Paula) Calloway; step-son, Donald (Edna) Talbert; 2 step-brothers, Fred and Ted (June) Pickett; 2 brothers-in-law, Edwin Quinn, Sr. and Edwin (Sadie) Wright, all of Flint; sister-in-law, Rachel James of Las Vegas, NV; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Mr. Calloway was preceded in death by his wife Vivian Wright. The family would like to express its deepest thanks to Edwin Quinn, Sr., Clara Winn and a very special thanks to Dr. Hussein Mazloum, Dr. Mohammed Al-Jabban and the staff of Genesys Health Park and Home Care.
