Deaconess Virta Hamilton

HAMILTON, Deaconess Virta - Age 87, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at her residence surround by her family and friends. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Rev. Cedell Timms, Officiating. Rev. Ovell Hamilton, Eulogist. Interment Gracelawn Cemetery, 5710 N. Saginaw St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Ms. Hamilton will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m., with family present from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Virta Ree Hamilton was born February 21, 1928 in Trenton, Arkansas, the sixth child of Josephus and Mozella (Barnett) Humphries She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family. Virta graduated from Eliza Miller High School in West Helena, AR. She joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age. Virta met the love of her life Lovelace Hamilton, when she was 15 years and five years later they were married in Toledo, Ohio on June 19, 1948; and happily spent the next 66 years together serving the Lord at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle where she was a Deaconess for over 50 years. Virta also served as a Sunday school teacher; church clerk, member of the True Light Missionary Circle and she sang in the Gospel Chorus. Most recently she was a member of Sunday school class #4. Virta was employed at AC Spark Plug for 30 years. Virta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Mrs. Virta Ree Hamilton leaves to cherish her memory, daughter, Bettina (Clarence) Campbell of Swartz Creek; MI. Grandson, Terrance (Regina) Campbell of Grosse Pointe, MI; and granddaughter Dr. TaMara (Marvin) Griffin of Chicago, IL.; Four grandchildren Rhaiana of Nashville, TN; Moniesha of Dallas, TX; Torrance and Tyler Campbell of Grosse Pointe, MI.; Eleven nieces, Robin Humphries; Denise Crawford; Lisa Wilson; Delores Blakely; Bobby Jean Gatewood; Martha Craig; Willo Hamilton; Edna Hamilton; Gwendolyn Bentley; Kathy Hamilton; Roslyn (Tony) Ivy; and Veronica Hamilton: Nine nephews, Gregory Humphries; Robert (Hernabeth) Humphries; John H. (Arlene) Hamilton; Sullivan Hamilton; Eric Hamilton; William Bruce (Jewel) Hamilton; Christopher Hamilton; Ovell (Erica) Hamilton; and John A. Hamilton. Virta will also be remembered by a host of great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends; including special friends: Edna Chaney; Paulette Johnson; Claudette Brandon; Mother Cassina Carter; Ozzie Holbrook; Patricia McQueen; Gladys Powell; Jethene Ross; Winda Webb; Vera Wilson; and Bobby Mercer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lovelace Hamilton; father, Josephus Humphries; mother, Mozella Humphries; maternal grandparents, Fannie and Grant Darby; sisters, Vernice Humphries, Myrtis Turner, Thelma Cunningham and JoMinnie Dugan; brother, Brinkie Humphries; brothers-in-law, RC Dugan, James Cunningham, Prince Turner, Thomas, Scapeo, Ecanis, Hughdell and Calvin Hamilton; sisters-in-law, Audrey Humphries, Ardelia Henderson, Goldie Grays, Durene and Daisy Hamilton; nieces, Ollie Pearl Lynch, Bettnie, Audrey and Shirley Hamilton; nephews, Curtis Cunningham, Dennis Humphries, Calvin Hamilton, Lovelace and Derry Grays; and great nephews, Anthony Blakely and Curtis and Tyrone Hamilton. The family reserves special thanks and recognition for, caregivers Paulette Johnson; Crystal McCadden; Delores; Edna; Clarence; Demond, Robert; Sullivan; and Terrance, for the wonderful care they provided that allowed Virta to remain in her beloved home until the end. The family also wishes to express special thanks to Nurse Cindy; CNA Mary; Social Worker Cecelia Williams; and other Heartland Hospice staff; and Dr. S. Sattar and staff; and the entire Metropolitan Baptist Church family for the love and support given to Virta.
