Verna Shook

SHOOK, Sis. Verna - passed away Wednesday April 20, 2005 at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10AM Tuesday, April 26, 2005 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Rev. Alexander Davis officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park G-9506 N. Dort Hwy. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home at 10AM. Sis. Shook will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 2-8pm Monday. Sis Verna Mae Shook was born August 20, 1913 in Dyersburg, Tennessee the daughter of Omar Grant and Maude (Brassfield) Thomason. Sister Verna moved to Flint, MI as a youth attending and graduating from Central High School. She was an avid Tennis player. Verna started at an early age in music with a gift from God. She gave back to our hearts and community. Sister Verna met and married Samuel J.D. Shook, Sr., and they enjoyed a happy union for forty -four years; and to this union one devoted son was born Samuel J.D. Shook, Jr. Sister Shook worked along side her devoted husband, Samuel at South Side Community Store for many years. Verna was a faithful member of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church for over 50 years. She was a wonderful former member of the "Young Women of Quinn." Sister Verna was the directress and organist of the Vesper Choir, now known as the "Chancel Choir." For many years she touched many lives with her music and smiles. Sister Verna leaves to cherish her devoted memories: son, Samuel J.D. Shook, Jr.; 3 grandchildren, Robert Lee Dunn, Verna Mae Shook and Jacqueline (Kevin) Shook-Hart; grandchildren; great-grandchildren all of Flint; special nephew, Malcolm M. (Gloria) Hemphill, Jr., and family of Chicago, IL; a host of extended family and special friends. Sister Shook was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel J.D. Shook, Sr.; father; mother; sister, Mary Elizabeth Hemphil; brother, Omar L. Thomason; grandson, Larry J. Dunn and daughter-in-law, Miola Shook. The family would like to express special thanks to Rev. Alexander Davis, neighbors, friends and special thanks to Hurley Medical Center 4th floor ICU and 5th floor CCU and Dr. Patel.
