Velma Jenkins

JENKINS, Ms. Velma - Age 42, passed away Friday, June 25, 2010 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing immediately at 11 a.m., Pastor Rosie Richardson officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Friday. Ms. Jenkins will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home. Mrs. Velma Elizabeth Jenkins was born July 31, 1967 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Johnny and Emma L. Jenkins. Velma was a lifelong resident of Flint, graduating from Flint Northwestern High School “Class of 1985.” As a youth, she attended and was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She and her family grew in faith at Keys of the Kingdom Ministries. Velma loved helping others and worked as a health care aide at various health care facilities. She was a fun-loving, delightful woman, who enjoyed spending time with family. Velma was always the “Life of the party” and carried a song in her heart. Full of jokes, Velma was sure to keep everyone laughing and smiling. She leaves to cherish her memory: husband of 17 years, Michael Owens of Flint; daughter, Reyotta S. Jenkins; 2 sons, Martelles J. Owens and Javier T. Jenkins; step children, Michael Owens, Jr., Michri and Malachi Owens; godchildren, Brittany and Marcus Toles, all of Flint; mother, Emma L. Jenkins; 3 sisters, Connie (Dennis) Howard of Flint, Bonita (Robert) Holden of Baton Rouge, LA and Vederia Jenkins of Flint; 2 nieces, LaQuanda (Jevez) Hill and Yashira Jenkins, both of Flint; 2 nephews, Darnelius Jenkins of Michigan City, IN and Dennis (Quianna) McCaw of Flint; 2 aunts, Gloria Thomas of Oak Park, MI and Evelyn Thompson of Detroit, MI; uncle, Reese Graham, Jr. of Winnfield, LA; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends including lifelong friends, Gail Toles, Theresa and Jerry Hunter, Rhonda Anderson, Tanya Ross and Bernestine Holmes. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Jenkins; and grandmother, Elizabeth Norris. The family would like to express special thanks to Northpointe Davita Dialysis Center staff, McLaren Regional Medical Center ICU nurse and staff and the host of doctors who served Velma faithfully.
