Mr. Thurmon Atkinson Sr.

ATKINSON, Mr. Thurmon Sr. - age 79, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015 at Briarwood Manor. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at First Union Baptist Church, 7004 Fleming Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Interment Gracelawn Community Cemetery, G-5710 N. Saginaw Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Atkinson will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12 p.m. - 8 p.m. Friday. Mr. Thurmon Atkinson, Sr. was born July 24, 1936 in Bolton, Mississippi the son of McKinley Atkinson and Estella Lee. He left Jackson, Mississippi is 1959 coming to Flint, Michigan. Thurmon has been a resident of Flint for 56 years. He was employed with Rogers and St. Clair Construction Company. Thurmon also worked with the Shrine Circus at IMA. He was a loving father, grandfather and uncle. Thurmon loved painting, working on cars and just driving around. He also loved playing cards (_____), but most of he loved being with family and friends. Thurmon would mingling with all the people at Simmons Square where he never met a stranger. He will be truly missed. Mr. Thurmon Atkinson, Sr. will leaves to cherish his memory: ex-wife, Lula P. Atkinson-Nelson; son, Thurmon Atkinson, Jr., both of Flint, MI; daughter, Earline Atkinson of Jackson, MS; grandchildren, Antoine and Talmadge Atkinson, both of Flint; sister, Margarie Nichols of Jackson, MS; a host of nieces including special nieces, Bobbie Rogers, Helen Chapman, Faye Chapman and Deborah Marshall, nephews including special nephews, “Pie Joe” Robert Fair, Joe John Chapman and Lamont Chapman, cousins; 4 sisters-in-law, Pauline Atkinson, Mary (Lawrence) Jordon, both of Jackson, MS, May Chapman and Gracie Evans, both of Flint; mother and father-in-law, Rev. Talmadge and Mattie Maude Williamson; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Mary Walker, Margaret Hawkins and Alvin Wells. Mr. Atkinson preceded in death by his parents, McKinley Atkinson and Estella Lee; sisters, Estella, Daisy, Gerline Atkinson and Millie Kency; brothers, Luster, McKinley II, Clifton, Sterling, Willie and Jimmy Atkinson.
