BAKER, Mr. Thomas W. "Tommy" - Age 58 of Flint, passed away Monday, March 12, 2007 at his residence. A celebration of life service will be held 10:30AM Monday, March 19, 2007 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 424 Kennelworth Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:30AM. Dr. Roy I. Greer officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30AM Monday. Mr. Baker will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10AM-8PM Sunday. "Tommy" was born on December 26, 1948 to Leona Grier and Robert Baker. He married Mary Baker (Ware) on October 3, 1970. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a man that always smiled at life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed playing cards with friends while watching sports events. Hosting the world's largest Superbowl parties to bring everyone close together. He was a great cook and expert barbeque chef. He also enjoyed gardening, playing basketball, and jogging to keep in shape. His jogging inspired many without words to challenge themselves to reach for more. Also known as "Touchdown Tommy" he was a star high school football player and graduate of Southwestern High School. He also played Semi-Pro football for the Pontiac Arrows. He then attended Ferris State University until he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a Veteran serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He proudly served his country from 1968-1970 as a Military Policeman. He began his employment as a committeeman for UAW Local 651 before being promoted to a Supervisor for A.C. Spark Plug now Delphi Electronics where he retired after over 35 years. "Tommy" was the supervisor that everyone loved to work for. Many people wanted to transfer to his department. He was an admirable leader at work, on the football field, in the military, with his family and in the community. Tommy was a kind, respected, well-loved man of the city. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 37 years, Mary Baker; 2 sons, Thomas W. Baker Jr. and Jamar Baker; daughter-in-law, Connie Baker; 6 grandchildren, Shutwa (Mary) Baker, Leona Baker, BreAsia Baker, Eurazia Baker, Davonna Baker, Kaylah Baker; 6 brothers and sisters, Mata Baker-Lowden, Merrit and Betty Baker, Russell Baker, Robert (Bobby) Baker Jr., Rhonda (Kaya) Gibson, Tracy Baker, Bruce Blackburn, Pamela Nichols, Ginger Blackburn, Charle (Renae) Watkins, Jr. and Gary Blackburn; sisters-in-law, Pamela Batson and Anita Smith; uncles and aunties, Ralph Grier, Danny Grier, Nita (Grier) Davis, Carlo Grier, Virginia (Grier) Vaughn; and a host of uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also many Colleagues and friends including, Ollie Fryer, Jerry Batson, Edward Fryer, Walter Tipton and Rudy Johnson. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents, Leona Grier and Robert Baker; mother-in-law, Jessie Mae Williams; grandparents, Leona Grier and Ward Grier; sister-in-law, Lenora Mitchell; and brother-in-law, Thomas Batson.
