Mrs. Sybil Harris

HARRIS, Mrs. Sybil - Age 62, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Briarwood Manor. Family hour 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Foss Avenue Baptist Church, 1159 E. Foss Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Reginald Flynn officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Association, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Harris will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1 p.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday. Mrs. Sybil Dianna Harris was born July 24, 1952 in Alabama to John L. and Julia M. (Thomas) Hodgers. Sybil moved to Flint in 1954 with her parents and three sisters, and when old enough, attended the Flint Community Schools—graduating from Northwestern High School in 1970. She joined Foss Avenue Baptist Church at an early age and was a supportive member the rest of her life. Through the years, she sang, ushered, attended Sunday School and Bible study, decorated and served as a Trustee. Sybil received an Associate’s Degree from Mott Community College, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan-Flint. She was a Certified Professional tutor with Michigan Dyslexia Institute and was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Beta Zeta Chapter. Sybil retired from General Motors Corporation, Truck and Bus Division. Sybil was married to Fred Alton Harris, who preceded her in death, and the mother of Kimberly Danita (Wilson) Mears and Jeffrey Alton Wilson. She was blessed with two granddaughters, Kendall Olivia and Julia Camille Mears. Sybil was a good mother and grandmother who loved her children, grandchildren, and extended family. She enjoyed arts, crafts, decorating, reading, writing and gardening, as well as helping others. Sybil leaves to cherish her memory, her children and grandchildren, sisters Carol (Emerson) Boles and Neysa (William) Burns, sister-in-law, Peggy Brady, mother-in-law Alice Wilson, aunts Sadie Holmon, Gloria (Clarence) Calloway, Margaret Hodges and Mary Thomas; uncles Christee (Ethel) Hodges, Willie (Mary Lois) Thomas and James (Zenia) Bennett, nieces Rachel Burns, Rhonda Hodges, Judy Harris and Linda Vaughn, Phyllis Holloway, JoAnn Jones and Ruth Jean White; nephews Steven Brady, Willie, Duane, Dale and Howard Williams. Godsons Christopher Chandler and Jalen Hodges, Sr., great-nephew Jalen Hodges, Jr., cousins, other relatives and friends. Sybil was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandparents, sister, Glenda Hodgers, aunts, uncles and cousins. The family expresses special thanks to Pastor Flynn, the Foss Avenue Church Family, Trustees, and Nursing Home Ministry; The caring staff of Hurley Medical Center/6-East Rehab, Briarwood Health Care Center & Heartland Hospice; Dr. Asif Ishaque, Dr. Brenda Rogers-Grays and Dr. Damayanthi Pandrangi, Veola Mason, Barbara Chandler, Karen Aldridge-Eason, the Boles Family, Shirley Henderson, Shirley Winfrey and Jerry Winfrey-Carter for faithful visits; and Deacon Dale McGhee for the monthly Communion service.
