HAWKINS, Supt. Steve A. Sr. - Age 67, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020 at his residence. Family hour 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Harris Memorial Church of God In Christ, 4317 Lippincott Blvd., Burton, MI, with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Administrative Assistant Eric C. Bogan, Host Pastor, Elder Carl Hawkins, Presiding, Bishop Roger L. Jones, Eulogist. Entombment Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy., Mt. Morris, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:30 AM Wednesday. Supt. Steve A. Hawkins will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM Tuesday. Superintendent Steve A. Hawkins was born on Valentine Day, February 14, 1953 in Waco, Texas, the third child of Elder Lewis Hawkins, Sr. and Missionary Lester Pearl (Robinson) Hawkins. At the age of three his mother noticed his musical ability and began to train him. He sang in the youth choir at his father church in Cleveland, OH, and traveled to many cities performing at churches and auditoriums. He was afforded the opportunity to meet Mahalia Jackson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the age of eleven he recorded his first album “The Spiritual Soul of a Child” with Checker Records and later “Two Wings” and several “45” singles after that. In 2014 he was interviewed by Bob Milkovich Radio Show in Chicago WLUW 88.7 -Pastor Steve Hawkins, Child Gospel Star. Supt. Hawkins followed the footsteps of his father and attended Saints Academy and received an Associate Arts Degree from Saints Junior College. While in attendance at Saints Junior College in 1967, he accepted Christ as his personal savior through the word of God delivered by former classmate Walter E. Bogan, who later became his Pastor and Bishop. Supt. Hawkins later attended William Tyndale College - Farmington Hills, Michigan and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree (major - Theology and minor in Business Administration). He was ordained as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ in 1989 under the leadership of the late Bishop P.A. Brooks, Northeast Jurisdiction. Supt. Hawkins was united in Holy Matrimony to Doris J. McGee on July 13, 1974, and to this blessed union three children were born: Kelli, Steve, Jr., and Justin. Supt. Hawkins was an entrepreneur who owned and operated two adult foster care homes for over 15 years. Prior to his call as Pastor, Supt. Hawkins served faithfully under the leadership of the late Bishop Milton Mathis, Prayer Garden COGIC San Jose, California, the late Supt. T.R. Harris, New Harris Temple COGIC, and the late Bishop W.E. Bogan, Harris Memorial COGIC. He has served as the local and state Music Dept. Director, local and District YPWW President, serve on the Deacon Board, Sunday School Teacher, Church Van Driver, Jail Ministry, Evangelism Team Leader and Associate Pastor. With the blessings of his Pastor, he accepted the call of God and founded the El Shaddai Ministries COCIC on June 15, 1997. His vision was simply to love the people, win souls, help to set the captive free; and to feed and encourage the body of Christ through preaching and teaching the Word of God. He had a tremendous desire to share the gospel with the incarcerated, the addicted, the abused, the abuser and to those who have never attended church. His vision also included providing safe and affordable housing, a food pantry, and an educational and recreational needs in the community in which he served. His Motto for the Ministry was “It’s All About Souls”, which included meeting the needs of the total man. He served as Superintendent of Judah District in the Great Lakes 1st Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, and the office of Administrative Assistant to the Bishop under the leadership of late Bishop W.E. Bogan and the late Bishop Clifford C. Dunlap. He also served on the Financial Committee for the Jurisdiction and as the Chairman of the Elder’s Council - Great Lakes 1st. Being led by the Spirit of God; Romans 8:14, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God,” a transfer was made in December 2011 to the Southeast Michigan Jurisdiction to serve under the leadership of Bishop Roger L. Jones until his demise. “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.” Rev 14:13 Early morning December 26, 2020, Supt. Steve A. Hawkins peacefully transitioned from labor to reward while sleeping. Superintendent Steve A. Hawkins leaves to cherish his memory: loving wife of 46 years, Doris J. Hawkins; 3 children, Kelli (Brian) Ransom, Steve, Jr (Deshirnette) Hawkins, and Justin Hawkins; 10 grandchildren, David, Trent, Allahna, Mekyle, Brian Jr., Zoi, Joshua, Bailey, Ashley (Howard) and Keisha (Michael); 4 great grandchildren, 1 sister-Arenia Faye Jones-San Jose, CA; aunt, Dorothy Abrams; in-laws, Lula Warren, Izora Elridge of Kalamazoo, MI, Clardine (Collin) Stevens, Jimmie McGee and Ellis (Shirley) McGee; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Supt. Hawkins was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Lester Pearl Hawkins, parents-in-law, Collin and Nancy McGee; brother, Lewis Hawkins, Jr; brothers-in-law, Kermit Jones, Nathaniel (Inez) McGee, Collin McGee and Robert McGee. Today we are celebrating the life of this Great Husband, we honor this father and grandfather, and we show obeisance to this Gift of God. We will never forget the Man, Ministry, and the Mission of Supt. Steve A.
