HOPSON, Mrs. Savannah - Age 87, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Regency-Grand Blanc. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1309 N. Ballenger Hwy., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Rev. Andrew Allie, officiating. Interment Flint Memorial Park, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy., Mt. Morris, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. Hopson will lie in state in the chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday. “Those who live in the Lord never see each other for the last time. Death is not extinguishing the light. It is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.” A TIME TO BE BORN Created in one of God’s own image, Savannah (Lewis) Hopson was born to Roosevelt and Rebecca (Wright) Lewis, on Tuesday, July 12, 1932 in Sardis, Mississippi. Savannah was one of 15 children born to this union. A TIME TO GROW Savannah graduated from Walton Chapel High School in 1953. Upon graduation, she attended Mississippi Industrial College where she received her Bachelor Degree in Education. Savannah began her years of employment in the Beecher School District as the first African American kindergarten teacher and retired after serving 25 years. Savannah was a member of Eta Phi Beta Service Sorority Delta Tau Chapter for 18 years. Savannah enjoyed her life. She found pleasure in sending cards to everyone she knew for their special occasions or just for encouragement. Savannah enjoyed shopping, writing poetry (as the one in the program), drawing, had fondness for barns with character, jewelry, laughing at cartoons, loved children’s books and especially her teddy bear collection. Most of all she enjoyed time with her family and friends. A TIME FOR LOVE In 1957, Savannah united in Holy Matrimony to Alfonza Hopson and they shared 59 years of marriage together. From this blessed union four children were born, Karen (Hopson) Jenkins, Gerald Hopson (deceased), Terence Hopson and Lei (Hopson) Davie. A TIME FOR WORSHIP Savannah accepted Christ at a young age and joined Mt. Level Baptist Church in Sardis, Mississippi. Savannah joined with Bethel United Methodist Church in 1959 under the pastorate of Rev. Paul V. Smith. Throughout her membership, she was active as a Sunday School Teacher, Communion Stewart, Prayer Team Warrior, Lay Speaker and Member of the United Methodist Women. Savannah was a faithful and devoted member for 60 years until her health began to fail. A TIME FOR SORROW On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, Savannah took the hand of Jesus and transitioned peacefully into eternal life to receive her crown. She leaves us here to cherish her many memories: daughters, Karen Jenkins of Mt. Morris, MI and Lei (Rev. Antonio) Davie of Burton, MI; sons, Terence (Tracy) Hopson of Grand Blanc, MI and Henry (Brenda) Hopson of Saginaw, MI; six grandchildren, Marlin Jenkins II of Mt. Morris, MI, Mychael Jenkins of Urbana, Illinois, Maria (Samuel) Byndom of San Antonio, Texas, Juliano Jenkins of Lansing, MI, Shuntera Hopson of Shreveport, Louisiana and Ethan Davie of Burton, MI; two great-grandchildren, Samar Byndom and Samuel Byndom II of San Antonio, Texas; special nephew/son, Alan Aron and niece Jacqueline Aaron both of Tinton Falls, NJ. Savannah was preceded in death by her husband, Alfonza Hopson (2017); son, Gerald Hopson (2002); parents, and all of her siblings, four sisters, Zettie Culp, Odessia Wesley, Isabell Aron and Doshia Lewis; five brothers, Leroy (Ruth) Lyons, Herbert (Doll Ester) Lewis, Hudson (Ann) Lewis, Roosevelt Lewis, John Esker Lewis. Many nieces and nephews, friends and family to cherish her memory. The family would like to express special thanks to her friend and Pastor Rev. Dr. Andrew Allie, her Bethel United Methodist Church family, her brother’s in Christ Oscar Flippen, Ken Hitts and John Maxwell. Myrna Kirkland, Lorna Harris, Juanita Battle, Paula Grant, Lois Sellers, Annie Stewart, Sallie Perry, Bessie Keys, JoAnn Turner, Minnie Armstrong, Ervine Byrd, Bettie Smiley, Kathleen Jones, Martha Hayes, the best neighbors anyone could ever have (Alice/Ernie, Dorothy, Ray/Gloria, & The Browns), Dr. Raj, Ellen, Dr. Moza, Dr. Heather, Dr. Bhatti, Betty, Dr. Zaki and many more, too numerous to name.
