Mr. Samuel Robert Buckner

BUCKNER, Mr. Samuel Robert - Age 96, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015 at his residence. Family hour 10 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2015 at First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 1226 Beach St., with funeral service commencing at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Ezra L. Tillman, Jr. officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church at 10 a.m Monday. Mr. Buckner will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Samuel Robert (Bob) Buckner was born to Samuel and Nannie Bell (Board) Buckner on September 9, 1918 in Summersville, KY. He had two older siblings, Roland and Thelma. Samuel attended school in Elizabethtown and Louisville, KY and was baptized at an early age. After participating in the Civilian Conservative Corps he was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 18, 1942. He was a heavy Artillery Gunner serving in battles in Normandy, northern France, and Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, and Central Europe and received several citations. He was honorably discharged December 12, 1945. In 1942, he married Ruth Hodgen. This marriage lasted until Ruth’s death in 1989 and the union was blessed with one daughter, Brenda Eileen Buckner. Bob and his family moved from Kentucky to Flint, MI in 1952. Shortly thereafter, he was hired into General Motors Chevrolet Plant Local 596. Samuel joined First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church where he remained a loyal member until his untimely death. He sang with the male chorus and was a trustee, in addition to his love for First Trinity, he liked to play golf, bowl, play table games, and travel. Bob married Precious Petross in 1991...his love for travel continues and he and his wife, Precious joined the First Class Travel Club. During his lifetime, he traveled to such places as China, Paris, Hawaii, Bermuda, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, The Panama Canal, and many Mediterranean cruises. He thoroughly enjoyed his 90th birthday celebration given by his family in 2008. Bob was known for his love of jewelry and Cadillac cars. He was driving a Cadillac at the time of his death. Mr. Samuel Robert (Bob) Bucker leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Precious Petross Buckner; daughter, Brenda Buckner Jones; 3 granddaughters, Marie (Anthony) Watts, Dominique, and Gwendolyn Jones of Flint; grandson, Min. Cameron Jones of Seattle, WA; 4 great grandchildren, Biynah, and Angelique Jones, Anthony Watts all of Flint, and Adrian Barliston-Jones of Radcliff, KY; 13 cousins, Mary Talley of Louisville, KY, Skip Mullen, Andrea Wilkes, Sheena Parker, Shela Bright, Tonya Moore, Renee Criswell of Chicago, IL, Judy Green, Reggie Scott Young, Venida Burns, Frenchie Sweatt, LaRon Talley, and Robert Watkins; 8 nieces, Barbara Greadington of Tallahassee, FL, Gloria Thrash of Flint, Stephanie Ringer of LaGrange, GA, Charlotte Stallard, Jean Evans, Maria Toby all of Louisville, KY, Gwendolyn and Karen Robinson Of Campbellsville, KY; 8 nephews, Gary, Kenneth, and George Cooper of Louisville, KY, Toby and James Robinson of Campbellsville, KY, Guy Hodgen of Florance, KY, Anthony and Timothy Greadington of Fort Lauderdale, FL; 2 step-sons, Charles (Bucilla) Petross of Atlanta, GA, and Michael Petross of Detroit, MI; 9 step-grandchildren; 28 step-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends including David Etheridge of Dallas, TX. Mr. Samuel Robert (Bob) Buckner was preceded in death by his parents: Samuel and Nannie Bell (Board) Buckner; brother, Roland Buckner; sister, Selma Grant; previous wife, Ruth Hodgen Buckner; son-in-law, Rev. Bee Jones; step-daughter, Janice Petross; sisters-in-law, Mary Mitchell, Wray Cooper, and Bernice Robinson; brothers-in-law, Sylvester, Earl, and George W. Hodgen, Kendall Robinson, Rev. Ulysses Young; cousins, Nannie Watkins, James Robert Mullen, William Mullen, Mildred Young, Standford Mullen, and other family members and friends.
