Mr. Roy Leon Powell

POWELL, Mr. Roy Leon - Age 74, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc. Mr. Powell will lie instate in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed Friday, November 27, 2020 from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Friday. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Roy Leon Powell was born on January 17,1946 in Gaston, NC, the son of Dorothy Mae Powell Jenkins and Cornelius Johnson. Leon or “Lee” was a loving, dedicated father to his children with a strong and independent will that carried him through his difficult years of living with a disability for 25 years, but on his own terms. He made a peaceful transition from this world to take his heavenly reward on November 18, 2020. He grew up in Gaston working on the family farm under the loving care of his Aunt Nell Powell Delbridge, Uncle Eddie Monroe Delbridge, and his godmother, Virginia Delbridge Lee who he affectionately called “Mama”. Leon graduated from Gumberry High School in Gumberry, NC in 1963. He went on to serve in the United States Army from December 1965 to November 1967 which included an extended assignment in Germany. After honorable discharge from the army, Leon moved to Flint and took courses at Flint Junior College now known as Mott Community College for a few semesters until he was hired at General Motors. He served in several positions at General Motors from late 1960s to his final position as a Supervisor at the V-6 Engine Plant on Stewart Street in Flint where he retired in August 1995. Leon enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was one of the founding Family Members of the Johnson-Lee Family Reunion and served as its first secretary. Also, Leon was a dedicated member of Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle in Flint. He was an active member and served on various church committees. Mostly, he loved singing in the choir with the Inspirational Voices alongside his extended community of dear friends and family. Roy Leon Powell leaves to cherish his memory: son, Michael Powell of Flint; daughter, LaToya Powell of Detroit, MI: 3 grandchildren, Dejion Smith, Jaiden Powell, and Madison Cabbill of Detroit, MI; step-father, Rev. Ira H. Jenkins Sr. of Linden, MI; sister, Gloria Evans; sisters-at-heart, Patricia (Percy) Dale Jacobs of Gaston, NC and Lessie Rhymes of Flint; 3 brothers, Ira (Wendy) Jenkins Jr. of NJ, Rev. Anthony Mark Johnson of Skippers, VA and Gregory (Yvonne) Johnson of San Antonio, TX; brothers-at-heart, Carlton “Junnie” Belfield Jr. of Gaston, and John Rhymes of Flint; aunts Jacqueline Broadway of Flint, Merlena Ferguson of San Rafael, CA, Nathornia Deloatch of Gaston, NC, Magnolia Powell Allen of Emporia, VA, Ernestine Yarbough and Pauline Barnes; uncle, Daniel Miles of Flint; god-daughter/niece, Nichelle (Alphonzo) Lee Crawford; a host of other relatives and special friends near and far that includes, Tonedia and Jerome Threlkeld, Myrtis Conner, Carmen Drake, Derek T. Nolen, and Kathy Nolen. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Mae Powell Jenkins and Cornelius Johnson; grandparents, Samuel Powell, Fannie Powell Miles, Hattie and Henry Johnson; mother of his children, Alicia Powell; aunts, Katie Powell Palmer and Pearlie (Floyd) Powell Nolen; uncle, Davis (Bertha) Johnson; brother-at-heart, William Wesley Palmer
