Roland Caruthers

CARUTHERS, Mr. Roland - Age 75, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Avalon Hospice. Family hour 10 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3502 Lapeer Rd. with funeral service at 11 a.m., Pastor Marvin A. Jennings, Sr., officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Saturday. Mr. Caruthers will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1-8 p.m. Friday. Mr. Roland Caruthers was born November 4, 1934 in Taylor, Mississippi, the first born son of Sam and Murlee Joy Caruthers. On July 5, 1953 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Queenie V. Rogers and to this union 4 children were born. He later moved to Flint, MI where he was employed by Anderson Tank and later Fisher Body Grand Blanc; a division of General Motors. Retiring after 30 years of employment, he spent his retiree years fishing, hunting, gardening and tending to the care of his beloved vehicles. An outspoken man, he will be remembered for his tenacious personality. He leaves to treasure his memory: 3 children, Joe (Fannie), Gloria and Larry, all of Flint; 7 grandchildren, Marquell (Renee’) Atkinson of California, PA, Antquan Gaddy, Tyrone Branch, Deonta and Joe Caruthers Jr. all of Flint, Danielle (James) Johnson of Eastpointe, MI and Lanaira Bowman of Ypsilanti, MI; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Sam (Faye) Caruthers of Detroit, MI; 2 sisters-in- law, Mary Kathryn Caruthers of Oxford, MS and Jeanette (Charlie) Rogers of Water Valley, MS; special niece, Tasha (Larell) Smith of Southfield, MI; special nephews, Lewis (Faye) Mosley of Flint and Fred (Baretta) Mosley Jr. of Oxford, MS; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Caruthers was preceded in death by his wife, Queenie; son, Roland Jr.; parents, Sam and Murlee Joy; 2 sisters; and 4 brothers. The family wishes to express special thanks to Jamal (Domino) Richards, Richard Seaman and Lewis Mosley for always checking in on my Daddy to the Hurley Medical Center ER staff and CICU Unit, RRC Dialysis, Dr. Marvin Latchana and staff, Ms. Sylvia of Avalon Hospice, the children of the old Rankin Street neighborhood, Pastor Marvin A. Jennings, Sr. and the Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church and Bishop Edgar L. Vann II and the Second Ebenezer Church of Detroit, MI.
