WOODWARD, Mr. Richard Newall - Age 71, passed away Friday, December 30, 2016 at Heritage Village in Waterville, Ohio. Family hour 10:00 AM Monday, January 9, 2017 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Pastor Kenneth L. Stewart, officiating. Interment Great Lakes National Cemetery, G-4200 Belford Rd., Holly, MI. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10:00 AM Monday. Mr. Woodward will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, and may be viewed from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sunday. Mr. Richard Newall Woodward was born January 10, 1945 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Cleo and Samuel Woodward. Richard was a resident of Heritage Village in Waterville, Ohio; he resided there for almost two years. He earned a B.S. in Engineering from University of Michigan. Before he became ill he tutored at-risk-children in Algebra. Richard worked for A.C. Spark Plug, a division of General Motors in the Engineering Department. Anyone who ever met Richard knew instantly, and said, that he was a genius and “extremely smart”; he was well versed on a variety of subjects. Richard kept up with the news and worldly events. Richard had a subscription for the New York Times newspaper and enjoyed reading a variety of materials, such as notable African American autobiographies, and learning about different cultures. Richard never met a stranger, if anyone would listen to him talk, they would find out a lot of different things that they did not know. Richard’s favorite hobby was playing basketball. He enjoyed watching professional basketball and his favorite team was the Pistons, and his Alma Mater U of M. Richard was in the United States Army, where he served in the Vietnam War and was Honorably Discharged. Richard also loved that he lived to see a Black man elected as President. He really admired President Barack Obama and his lovely family. Mr. Richard Newall Woodward leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Anisa (Erobo) Ubogu and Deandria Roberts; grandchildren, Kome and Rezi Ubogu, all of Hoover, AL; 2 sisters, Regina (Woodward) Baker and Althea Davis, both of Flint; brother, Alfred (Tonya) Woodward of Lansing, MI; 6 nieces, Ebony, Cherish, Tonya, Nicole, Charysma and Cay’Dence; 9 nephews, Criszaveon, Kevelin, Jr., Ju’Rome, Dondric, Kenny, Cashis, Cassidy, Ja’Cyhan and Ja’Cyhare; 6 cousins, Harold (Kay), Billy (Mary), Diane, Craig, Dennis and Michael; a host of other relatives and friends including, Angela’s mother, Cora, and Jermaine’s mother, Rose. Mr. Woodward was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Woodward; son, Germaine Mitchell; parents, Cleo and Samuel Woodward; grandparents, Albert and Ruby (Thomas) Woodward; aunts, Bertha Woodward, Mattie Little, Virginia Earley and Mary Lou Woodward; uncle, Charlie Frank; nephew, Kevelin Baker, Sr. and cousin, Sharlene Woodward. The family would like to express special thanks to Queenie; whom Richard loved, and she loved him, Ms. Vee, Yerretta and staff at Heritage Village for taking great care of Richard, his Ride or Die, favorite nieces, Ebony and Cherish; who was with their uncle until the end, Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church family and the staff of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home.
