Mrs. Norma Jean Avery

AVERY, Mrs. Norma Jean - passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Family hour 10:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, 317 E. Hamilton Ave., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Pastor Allen C. Overton Sr., officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Thursday. Mrs. Avery will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Wednesday. Mrs. Norma Jean Avery was born in Stamps, Arkansas the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt and Geneva (Young) Miller. She graduated from Ellis High School in Stamps, AR where she also excelled at playing basketball and tennis. She would later go on to earn a Nursing Certificate. Norma Jean accepted Christ at an early age and was a longtime member of Canaan Baptist Church under the tutelage of Reverend Alfred L.C. Robbs. She would later join Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, also under the leadership of Rev. Robbs. Mrs. Avery began working as a Teachers Aid when her children were young. She would later gain employment at A.C. Delco a division of General Motors until her retirement. She was an avid bowler and also enjoyed playing blooper ball. She was known for being one of the best seamstresses and an excellent cook. Her most famous creations included caramel, coconut, German Chocolate cakes and sweet potato pies. In her spare time she would enjoy watching the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons, Jeopardy and the Wheel of Fortune. Mrs. Norma Jean Avery leaves to cherish her memory: 2 daughters, Patricia Jean Avery of Flint and Sharon D. (David) Patrick of Burton, MI; 3 sons, Gary D. Wheeler of Flint Twp, MI, James E. (Demetris) Avery of Flint Township and Kevin G. Avery of Spring Hill, TN; special granddaughter, Shasta S. Avery; 2 step children, Jamesetta Mickens and Audrey Walker, both of Toledo, OH; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; 4 sisters, Ophelia Simpson, Joe Ann Davis, Paulette Robinson, all of Flint and Jackie (Floyd) Pree of Lewisville, AR; 1 brother, Pledger Miller of Pine Bluff, AR; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Jezena McPherson of Tucson, AZ, Mrs. Ella Malone, Catherine Swerenger and Thad Avery, all of Memphis, TN; brother in law, Jessie Davis Jr, Eddie Robinson and Henry Hill, all of Flint, Tanya Sanders of Acworth, GA, Maria and Gary, both of Flint, Jean Robertson of Rio Vista, CA, Estelle Allen of Southfield, MI, the Thomas, Singleton, Brown and Sykes families, all of TN. Mrs. Avery was preceded in death by: her husband, James Avery; mother, Geneva (Young) Miller; father, Roosevelt Miller; brothers, Oliver Miller and Bobby D. Miller; brother in law, Richard Simpson; Mrs. Vivian Steele and Shirley Willis. The family would like to express special thanks to McLaren Regional Medical Center of Flint.
