McGOODWIN LEWIS, Mrs. Nina Roxie - Age 89, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023, at her residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday November 4, 2023, at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 424 Kennelworth Ave. with Funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM, Pastor Jevon Catlett, Host Pastor, Pastor Moses Bingham, officiating and Rev. Phyllis McCree, Eulogist. Interment Glenwood Cemetery, 2500 W. Court St. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:00 AM Saturday. Mrs. Nina McGoodwin Lewis will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM Friday, with family present to receive friends from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM. Roxie) Nina McGoodwin Lewis, the fourth child of Daingerfield and Roxie (Dixon) McGoodwin, was born in Indiana, educated in Ohio and spent all of her adult life in Michigan: a true Mid-Westerner! More importantly, she was raised in Union Baptist Church: baptized at the old Church, listening to Mrs. Mangrum playing the organ, the newly formed Gospel Choir singing Spirituals and hymns and Rev. Wilber Page preaching the Word of GOD! After high school, she followed her brother, Roland, to Central State University where she was a cheerleader, on the Rifle Team, and on the Radio Guild. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and in 1953, became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. In 1956, she graduated Cum Laude and was recruited by the Flint Community Schools to teach first grade. She spent her entire professional career, 35 years, with the Flint Community schools as a teacher, coordinator, instructional specialist and assistant principal. Teaching was such a joy that, when teaching, she never felt it was actual work: just another blessing from GOD! She received her Master’s Degree in Reading from Michigan State University and did additional graduate studies at the University of Michigan. During this time, she married her college sweetheart, LeVert and they were blessed with a wonderful son, LeVert Jr. (Chip), both of whom have gone on to Glory. At age seventy-five, Nina was married, at Union Baptist Church by Pastor Orlando Yates, to her “golden-years love”, Billie Lewis, MD, who went to be with the LORD the Spring of 2016. On her first Sunday in Flint, Nina McGoodwin Lewis united with Mount Olive Baptist Church where she has stayed actively involved and developed a closer, more personal relationship with the Lord, Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Chancel Choir, Sunday School Class # 5, the Wednesday Night Bible Study, the Scholarship Committee and the Nomination Committee. She was President of the Mother’s Ministry and served on the Trustee Board for fourteen years. She served on the Constitution and By-laws Committee, twice served as Chair of Women’s Day and was Chairperson of the Centennial Committee. Nina Lewis was active in the Flint community. She was a member and past President of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and of the Central Flint Optimist Club; past Board member of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and of the Women’s and Girl’s Fund; an Archousa of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Gamma Delta Boule; past member and Board Secretary of the Whaley Home for Children; and a 63-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority where she served with love in various capacities. Nina was the recipient of the Salvation Army “Hands of Mercy” Award; the Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club “Sojourner Truth” Award; and Zeta Beta Omega’s “Laura Jean Thompson” Award. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling and playing bridge. “I climbed the Great Wall of China; snorkeled in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef; safaried in the Serengeti of Kenya viewed marvelous, old paintings at the Louvre; trekked the frozen tundra of Alaska; was baptized in the Jordan River. Not one of these exciting experiences was as fulfilling as having a personal relationship with my LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST!” Her favorite Scripture is the 23rd Psalm and John 3:16 from which she received the assurance of GOD’s provision, protection and power. Nina was preceded in death by her parents, Daingerfield and Roxie McGoodwin; brother, Daingerfield “Baby Brother” McGoodwin; husband, M. LeVert Jones, Sr.; nieces Roselyn Z. Cox and Jacquelyn Woods; cousin Evangeline Wells; precious son M. LeVert “Chip” Jones, Jr.; sister and brother-in-law, Rose Waldine and Ralph Ziegler; aunts, Arletta M. Graves and Rose M. Evans; husband Billie Lewis, MD. Nina McGoodwin Lewis is survived by her grandchildren: LaMarr D. Lee and Alexis Arletta Jones; great-grandchildren: LaMarr, Jr. and LaChelle Lee; brother Roland C. (Lillian) McGoodwin, DDS; nieces Carolyn Hatcher and Nina M. McGoodwin; nephew: Roland C. (Tamil) McGoodwin; cousins: Eddie (Samantha) Dixon, Michael Evans and Sarah (Al) Sutton. Nina is further survived by dear friends: Anne and Melvin Gregory, Lois Primas, Janet and John Taylor; other dear friends and relatives; the Just Us Bridge Club, members of Zeta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Mount Olive Church Family.
