Nellie Matthews

MATTHEWS, Mrs. Nellie - Age 72, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 in Riverdale, GA. Family hour 11AM Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Civic Heights C.O.G.I.C., 3610 Wisner St., with funeral service commencing at 12Noon. Interment Flint Memorial Park, G-9506 N. Dort Hwy. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 11AM Thursday. Mrs. Matthews will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12Noon-8PM Wednesday. Ms. Nellie Matthews was born October 20, 1936 in Boykin, South Carolina, the daughter of James and Ella (Pea) Powell. Ms. Matthews graduated from St. Matthews High School in Camden, South Carolina. She continued her life long love of education by attending enrichment classes via Beecher School District. Ms. Nellie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Raftin Creek Baptist Church in Rembert, South Carolina. When Sister Nellie first joined the church when she moved to Michigan, she was under the leadership of the late Elder Felix Early at the New Covenant Church of God in Christ (now the Civic Heights Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder Samuel Marsh). She was a faithful member for 40 years, and has served in many capacities in the church until her health failed. Ms. Nellie retired from AVI Food Processing Corporation as a cashier, after 40 years of service. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and quiet time at home with her family. Ms. Nellie was united in Holy Matrimony to the late M.T. Matthews and to this union four children were born. She leaves to cherish her memory: 2 sons, Danny (Carmen) Matthews and Terry (Betty) Matthews both of Flint; 2 daughters, Carolyn Matthews-Jackson of Riverdale, GA and Therese Matthews of Flint; 6 grandchildren, Jamel (Tammy) Booth, Danny (Nikki) Booth, Tiffany Matthews, Devaughn Wilson, all of Flint, Chyane Matthews and Katherine Jackson both of Riverdale, GA; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Powell-Bennett of Rembert, SC’ 4 brothers, James (Emma) Powell of Flint, Willie Powell, Joe (Ruby) Powell and Dan Powell, all of Rembert, SC; 2 sisters-in-law, Ann Powell and Fannie (Keith) Bedenfield, all of Flint; aunt, Carine Pea-Lockwood of North Carolina; a host of other relatives and dear devoted friends. Ms. Matthews was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ella Powell; sisters, Sally Smith and Elowise Glover; and brothers, Ernest Powell and Elder Samuel Powell. Ms. Nellie will be greatly missed and forever remembered for her great inner strength and for the love she had for her family and friends. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of McLaren Regional Medical Center, Visiting Nurses and Hospice, Cancer Center, Dr. Zaki, Dr. Sigh and Dr. Varghese for all their wonderful services.
