Mother Small

SMALL, Mother Secolar "Mut" - Age 97, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Season Hospice. Family hour 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2011 at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service commencing at 1 p.m. Eld. Patrick Sanders Interim Pastor, Bishop Odis A. Floyd, Senior Pastor. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12:30 p.m. Friday. Mother Small will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 1-8 p.m. Thursday. Mother Secolar Small “Mut” was born February 26, 1914 in Marian, Alabama to Anderson and Rosie Lee Williams. Mother Small accepted Christ at an early age, then joined the Springfield Baptist Church in Sawyerville, Alabama. She later met Mattew “Nick” Small and united in Holy Matrimony. Mother Small was the proud mother of 5 children. After the death of her husband, she left Alabama and went to Providence, Rhode Island, where she worked for many years. Afterwhich, she then moved to Flint, Michigan and later relocated back to Alabama to care for her sister, Ada. Mother Small returned to Flint and joined the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother's Board. After many years of living in Flint, she moved to Detroit and joined Bethlehem Spiritual Temple, where she was a member until her death. Mother Small loved her Peppermint, Smothered Chicken and Rice and her son-in-law, Tommy’s “Biscuits from Scratch.” Mother Small never left her house without being dressed up, with her purse and at least $2.00. She loved going to church and one of her favorite quotes was, “Let Jesus Lead You.” Mother Secolar Small leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Rosa (Rev. Willie H.) Frierson, Sr. and Mary Alice (Tom C.) Williams, Sr.; son, Charlie (Josephine) Small; daughters-in-law, Dorothy Small and Edna (Small) Elam; 20 grandchildren, Willie Jr., Tamma (Mitchell) Thomas, Roosevelt Frierson, Steve and Tryrone Frierson, Diane, Tom Jr. (Celeste), Senegal Taurus(Cheryl) Williams, Secolar, Stanley, Steven, Jeanette, Matilia, Doris, Charlie Jr., Kenya, Joseph, Henry Jr., Juquette, Jacoby; 30 great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and a host of loving cousins. Mother Small was preceded in death by her husband, Mattew “Nick” Small, Sr.; 2 sons, Mattew “Fat” Small, Jr. and Henry “Flap” Small; parents, Anderson and Rosie Lee Williams; 5 grandchildren, Gwendolyn Frierson, Marie Frierson, Kimberly, Juan and Derrick Small; 2 sisters; and 3 brothers.
