Mother Cummings

CUMMINGS, Mother Herlene - Went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 12, 2006 at her residence. Family hour 10AM Saturday, March 18, 2006 at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 4805 N. Saginaw St., with funeral service commencing at 11AM. Pastor Henry L. Fuller, officiating. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the funeral home 10AM Saturday. Mrs. Cummings will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 2PM-8PM Friday. Mother Herlene Cummings was born in Bamford, Alabama, the third child of Herbert and Ella (Shin) Blake. Mother gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized in Leeds, Alabama. Mother Cummings relocated to Flint, Michigan in 1940. She attended Emerson Junior High School and Northern High School. Mother was united in Holy Matrimony to James J. Cummings of Flint, Michigan in 1947. Mother united with the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully on the Mothers and Deaconess Ministry until her health failed. Mother Cummings was employed at Genesee Memorial Hospital for 19 years. She enjoyed going to football and basketball games and spending time with her family. Mother Cummings was always beautifully attired, for whatever occasion. Mother Herlene Cummings leaves to cherish sweet memories: 5 daughters, Jacqueline Nichols, Ettica Jean Buyck, Violet (Ivy) Legardye and Trenace and Patricia Cummings; 3 sons, James A. Cummings, Jr., Marcus (Deborah) Cummings of Suithand, MD, and Delano Cummings; step-daughter, Joann Harris; brother, Ulysses Blake, all of Flint; 18 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 5 nieces; 5 nephews. Mother Cummings was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Mereith Cummings; daughter, Debra Cummings; grandson, Ivy Lewis LeGardye; 2 sisters, Leona Bradley and Gloria Hardy; 2 brothers, Appollo and George Blake. The family would like to express special thanks to Avalon Hospice, Davita Dialysis Center, Dr. Sead and staff, Pastor Fuller and the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church family, Jamie and Janean, aunt Dee Dee, best friend Mable.
