Mother Mildred Laverne Grigsby

GRIGSBY, Mother Mildred L. - Age 82, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at her residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Monday, August 14, 2023, at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd, with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM., Pastor Alfred Harris Jr., Presiding. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the Church 10:00 AM Monday. Mother Grigsby will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM Sunday, with family present to receive friends from 2:00PM-4:00PM. Mother Mildred Laverne Grigsby was born January 6, 1941 in Hernando, Mississippi, amongst five children, she was the oldest child born to the union of Willie Sherman and Willie Mae (Johnson) McClain, who preceded her in death. Her grandmother used to call her “Doll Baby”, her uncle called her “Mild Red” and other family and friends called her “Ms. G”, “Granny Mildred” and “Ms. Hamlett”. She professed Christ at an early age at Rising Sun Missionary Baptist Church in Hernando, MS. Mildred graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, TN, where math was her favorite subject and if she didn’t get 100% on her test, she would be upset with herself. Mildred and Edward were married in 1958 and they moved their family of 5 beautiful children to Flint, Michigan in December of 1968. Mildred joined the Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late pastor Rev. Henry Robinson. There she utilized her vocal gifts to help develop the Young Adult Music Ministry. Still today her legacy continues. Mildred has always had a passion for working with the youth. She later became the 1st Lady of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Clinton Grigsby where she was a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director, mother and granny to all. She became a faithful and dedicated member of the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Odis Floyd. Mildred was a member of the IV’s, Mothers Board, and volunteered at the COFY Center. She was known throughout the Flint area as a songstress and was blessed to collaborate with her youngest daughter on the Pure Gold Album, song titled “The Name of Jesus.” Mildred was the biggest fan of Lynne’s singing and was still singing with her a few days ago, when she informed Lynne she had to sing tenor. Mother Grigsby retired from General Motors Corporation after 30 years of service. After retirement she said she wasn’t doing anything but enjoying her family. Mother Mildred Laverne Grigsby leaves to cherish her sweet memories: 3 daughters, Angela Hamlett-Richard, Evelyn Hamlett and Monica Lynne (Dwayne) Calloway; daughter-in-love, Verlin Denise Hamlett; 2 sisters, Mariah (the late Pascal) Askew and Willette (the later Angus) Williams; brother, Henry (Annie) McClain; 8 grandchildren, DaJuan (Plishette) Hamlett, Nakia (David) Odom, Reggie Mason, Nicholas (Ashley) Hamlett, Tonneisha (Douglas) Scott, Carl Jones, Jacolby Hamlett and Kaylon Hamlett; 11 great-grandchildren, Dasia Jones, LeJuan Townsend, Daslynn Hamlett, Raven Odom, Joshua Odom, Jacob Odom, Tyre Scott, Zion Crawford, A’re Shyann, Tristan Khai and Nicholas Sean Hamlett II (on his way); 2 great-great-grandchildren, Kali Jones and Khylin Jones; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; special bonus grandchild, LaShaunta Hairston and great-grandchild, Gabrielle Hairston. On August 2, 2023, God called Mildred’s name and she went home to be with the Lord. She peacefully closed her eyes and took her last breath. Mother Grigsby was preceded in death by her 2 sons, Karl Hamlett and Edward Hamlett Jr.; father of her children, Edward Hamlett; son-in-law, Andre Richard; sister, Ruthie Marie Askew; brothers-in-law, Lendon Askew, Angus Williams and Pascal Askew. The family would like to express special thanks to Pastor Solomon Kinloch, Pastor Lawrence Vaughn and the Triumph Church family, Pastor A.J. Harris Jr. and the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church family, Pastor Al Williams and the Renewed Faith Church family, Nurse Joan Newman and The Hospice Care Team. Very special thanks to her friends, Leon Martin, Jean Webb and Elwanda Pearl; caregivers, Marlene Cleveland, Ashanti Walker, Amanda Hairston and Shannika Williams, and her awesome devoted daughters.
