SHUMPERT, Mr. Michael - Age 75, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI. Family hour 10:00 AM Saturday, July 6, 2019 at First Union Baptist Church, 7004 Fleming Rd., Pastor Archie Powell Jr., Host Pastor, with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Interment River Rest Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Saturday. Mr. Shumpert will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed from 12:00 PM-8:00 PM Friday with family present to receive friends from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. Mr. Michael Joseph Shumpert was born May 27, 1944 in Flint, Michigan the son of Flossie Shumpert-Miller. He accepted Christ at an early age. Michael attended Flint Public Schools and graduated from Flint Central High School in 1963. After graduation Michael began a career in sales at Robert David Allen clothing store and later at WDZZ 92.7 FM radio station. Michael always believed in the importance of working for oneself. He has always been a trailblazer who would command a room and leave a lasting impression on everyone he met. At the time of his passing, Michael owned and operated the only African American independent radio station in the Greater Flint and Saginaw Metropolitan Area. His station’s motto is “With Opportunity We Empower” and he did just that. It was his desire that the community seize opportunities presented, create opportunities where none exist and to be better, stronger and empowered. Mr. Michael Joseph Shumpert leaves to cherish his memory; devoted wife of 54 years Hollie Shumpert; daughter, Michele (Raymond) Shumpert-Barton of Flint; grandchild, Cameron M. Barton of Flint; 6 sisters, Sharon Alexander, Gail Miller, Zander Jordan, Shantel (Leslie) Williams, Sherri Miller and Dematrice Miller; 4 brothers, Larry (Denola) Miller, James Miller, Troy Miller and Robert Miller; several nieces; several nephews; uncle Walter (Maggie) Williams of Flint; sisters-in-law, Karon (Theodore) Moore and Pam Miller, both of Flint; 3 brothers-in-law, Eddie, Freddie and Frank Willingham, all of Flint; a host of other relatives and friends including special friends, Sheldon Neeley, Woodrow Stanley, Lawrence E. Moon, Nate Campbell, Marvin Mabry, the entire staff at WOWE 98.9; special cousins, Wayne Shumpert, Noah Shumpert and Lane Ellis. Michael was preceded in death by: mother, Flossie Miller, grandmother, Susie Shumpert; brothers, Rodney and Brian Miller; several aunts; several uncles; and mother-in-law, Rebecca Willingham.
