SUMMERS, Mr. Melvin - Age 81, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2025 at his residence. Family hour 10:00 AM Monday, April 28, 2025 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM. Rev. Fred Flowers, officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the chapel 10:00 AM Monday, April 28, 2025. Mr. Summers will lie in state in the chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home and may be viewed Sunday, April 27, 2025 from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Mr. Melvin Summers, age 81 years old, passed away on April 10, 2025 at his residence. He was born to the parents of Donnie and Hassie Summers in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Melvin moved to Flint, Michigan at a young age and his journey was one marked by faith, family, and an unwavering commitment to community. Melvin’s spiritual path continued at Promise Tabernacle Church where he received Jesus Christ as Lord and was baptized on November 5, 1989. He proudly served in the sound booth and as videographer. He was employed at General Motors for over four decades where he valued hard work and dedication. Melvin is a proud graduate of Flint Central High School where he lettered in basketball, football, and track for four years. One of his fondest memories was catching the winning touchdown at Atwood Stadium, a moment of triumph he achieved even while battling a concussion. Melvin garnered the nicknames ”Moose” and “Hammer” amongst his family and friends. His athletic ability carried him to the University of Wyoming where he played football, and his legacy was later honored with an induction into The Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame. Melvin’s love for sports extended beyond his own achievements. He was an avid bowler and devoted time to coaching bowling at Flint Hamady High School where and was a familiar, encouraging presence at countless high school basketball and football games. Melvin also loved gardening, lawn care and spending time with his family. He took special pride in his garden, especially his famously large greens and watermelons. He would often recall the great memories driving to Pine Bluff, Arkansas to family reunions or just to visit with family. Melvin Summers leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 58 years, Jean Summers. His legacy is left with his four children, Joeray (LaTonya) Allen, LaWanda (Gary) Hardnett, all of Flint, LaShawn (Brian) Taylor of Detroit, MI and Marcus Summers of Flint. He is survived by: 2 brothers, Donnie Summers of Flint and Curley (Bonnie) Summers of Mt. Clemens, MI; 3 sisters, Dorothy Mae Towns of Mt. Morris, MI, Corine (Dave) Anthony of Flint, and Ella Robinson of Little Rock, AR; grandchildren, Michael Goss, Tyannia Summers, Martwan Allen, Decorian Banks, Brian Taylor, Bre’Ann Taylor, Adrianna Summers, Brandon Allen Webb, Da’Kiya Summers Tony Bell, Latika Pounds, and Trey Gason; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends; including special bond with great-grandson, Genesis “Jellyroll” & Osiris Wyatt, Legend Seay and special cousin, Gene Summers, dearest mother-in-law Dorothy Smith. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Donnie and Hassie Summers; 4 sisters, Tylese Harris, Helen Robinson, Minnie Pearl Richardson, and Donzella Holliday.
